Would home pressed and filtered canola oil be ok to use in an SVO conversion or would it need further refining? I've been thinking about pressing some to try as a home heating oil but it would be an added plus if it would be safe in my 7.3 IDI either straight or as a blend.

Your getting into a scary area. Fresh pressed oil needs to be de-gummed. I don't know how that is done, but have read a few threads on it before. There are a few that believe this is not necessary. So the debate lives on every so often on forums.

I have no direct experience, just what I've read.

As for running VO in a home boiler, I think I've read it will gum up the works if you do not modify the boiler. There is a good Yahoo Group on home heating. I've seen others post this question, everyone recommends they go there for info. I'm sure you can find the group if you search yahoo groups.

I just bought an oil press, and have started testing cold press can oil. My first batch reacted ok ,but CG testing showed elevated sulfur level's. IMHO i don't think it is feasable as a biodiesel feedstock. Degumming is expensive, it requires the use of Hexane, or sulfuricacid. Both are scary and dangerious to work with, and also quite expensive. Will post more as I do further testing. FABMANDELUX
