Unhappy Dual Mass flywheel problems on 1992 F250

Truck at repair shop to have clutch replaced and was advised need new flywheel. Apparently it is this dual mass flywheel and can't be "turned". Anyway, I've done some research and have some questions. First, found info on LUK conversion. Anyone used this? Good, Bad? Can I just get the flywheel or do I have to use the entire kit? Also, have been told have 11 inch clutch or a 12 inch clutch. Will 12 flywheel hook up to 11 inch, howabout 13 inch to a 12? If I decide to stay with dual mass flywheel, any ideas on where I can get one for less than $800?

i would go with the luk unit. the dm flywheel will only fail again, and for the price of a dm flywheel, you can get a complete luk setup.

Do some searches on this site and others, and you will get a variety of opinions. Lots of folks have gone with the LUK setup. Biggest complaint with it seems to be gear rollover noise. Personally, I didn't want to take the chance. I got a new DMF kit (flywheel, disk & pressure plate, pilot and throwout bearing) from South Bend Clutch for around $850.

I helped a friend put a Luk in his father's 94, the cost was well under half of what he could get the dual mass for. I never noticed any noise, and they never said anything. BUt his dad got back after we put that in, and he acme up to me kinda like pissed off, and said "what did you do to my truck?" Of course I didn't know what he was talking about, and he then let me off the hook saying" I t has more power than it ever did!" He was just kinda picking on me. The Luk flywheel has some more mass to it, so the torque it gives gives the impression of more power.

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts and the diesel forums 04hdchick.

What I like the best about my LUK conversion is the pedal effort required is significantly less than stock. It has a very light, very fast "sports car" sort of feel to it. That, and the full repset with the new flywheel costs about the same as just a replacement clutch kit from Ford.

My stock dual mass flywheel was the stiffest piece of **** clutch Ive ever used. LuK singlemass is like pushing on a pillow and it locks up just fine. In 1st and reverse it has a whine but that is normal. Even clutches on some powerstrokes do that too. Best 700 dollars I spent on my vehicle.
