99 Ranger Transmission fluid - how much does it hold?
I have a '99 Ranger, 4.0 L, 4x4. I'm changing the transmission fluid and filter myself because everyone wants a fortune to do it. I live in San Francisco and to get anything done here costs a lot of $$. I don't have the owners manual. How much fluid does the tranny and transfer case hold? Is the torque converter the same as the transfer case? Maybe I'm mixing up terminology. Thanks!

A full fluid change on the transmission takes about 10 quarts. The transfer case takes about 1.25 quarts. The torque converter is part of the transmission and not the transfer case. If you drop the pan you will only change a small part of the transmission fluid. To change it all requires pumping it out of the transmission. It runs about $80.00 at a transmission shop and about $130.00 at a dealership in most areas around the country.

The 5R55E tranny holds 10 quarts totally dry, including the lines. Dropping the pan will remove about 4 quarts or so.
