I was just given a 1995 F150 4x4 with manual locking hubs and I do not know the proper way to put it into 4WD. Do I lock the hubs first and then put in 4wd? Do I need to be stopped and in neutral? Any assistance would be much appreciated. This site was a nice find. Will try and become a regular.

Lock the hubs first, then put it in 4x4. You can slightly be moving when you engage the 4x4, it all depends on the truck, some you can be going under 45 and engage it. Best thing to do is put it in 4x4 when its not moving.

 

If you want to shift into 4lo, you definitely have to be in neutral and stopped. Like ramboss said, you can be moving to shift into 4hi.

 

4 lo it must be in N to engage or engage 4 hi when the speed is under 30 mph. hubs need to be locked before placing it in 4x4.
