pinion seal replacement 9-inch rearend

What's the best method for replacing the pinion seal on a 9 inch rearend? What's the torque for the nut? and do I need to replace the crush collar? Also are there any tips for removing the windshield chrome on a 67- 72 f-100?

Buzz,
If you can get a large enough pipe wrench, you can pin the wrench against the ground and with a breaker bar you can break the pinion nut loose. Use the weight of the truck to hold the damn thing still. Once you get it loose a bit, the flange should come out. Replace your seal and replace the flange. It's difficult to give a torque number. Carefully tighten the nut until there is no more play. I mean the necessary play! I think your supposed to have something like .006 to .012 end play. Don't quote me, check the spec yourself! You'll know when you've got the play out, the rest is the most important. If you over tighten the nut, the rear end won't turn and it may not hold torque after you loosen it back up. A long breaker bar with a cheater pipe is essential. Go slow when you get down close and you'll be fine.
Good luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher

I always use a new pinion nut and red lock-tite.It only takes one loosening up to change a person's mind-especially if it's a customer.
