Removing door and tailgate emblems

How are the door, tailgate, and quarter panel emblems attached? It looks like just double-sided tape (heavy duty) and some pins (just for alignment).

Mine are pretty worn and flaking off, so I'd like to replace them with the newer '05 emblems (pretty cheap from the dealer).

Can I just use a heat gun on low setting and some fishing line to get them loose without damaging the paint? Is there a better method?

Gee, thanks for the help. Maybe it would be even faster to remove the emblems if I just back into my garage and scrap the panel along the house!

I hear this is a common occurrence anyway

I removed a stealership emblem that was fastened in the same manner with double sided tape.

I used a narrow metal spackle knife to force between the emblem and truck, kinda slicing through the tape. With some light pressure, pulling away from the truck, the emblem finally gave way and I could pull it the rest of the way off by hand. What was left was alot of the double sided tape goo. I saturated it with Goo-Gone and with a nylon spackle knife and a soft cloth, was able to remove the remainder.

My Powerstroke emblem was starting to fall off the front left quarter panel and I simply removed it by hand but still had some of the tape remaining that I delt with the same way. To re-install it, I had some 3M automotive tape made for installing door protection, fender flares, etc. to automotive finishes. Looks like the same stuff Ford uses but in 3/4" rolls. I have seen this tape in K-Mart craft departments but it's not labeled 3M. Gray double sided tape with a red plastic protector covering one side of the tape. REAL STICKY stuff.

But are the tailgate and fender alignment pin dimensions the same?

I pulled the powerstroke ones off by putting a large exacto blade under the emblem to protect the paint and then used that to pry against eventually popping it off. You can actually order personalized billet badges to replace them. I havnt decided what to put on mine yet.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges.

Where do you order the personalized badges?

Come to think of it, the tailgate oval is recessed. I couldn't say if it has centering pins or their dimensions. I know because I want to remove all logos and heard the 250/350 is problematic and then noticed the tailgate is recessed.

I may still remove the powerstroke badges if I have time. I have always used a nylon putty knife on numerous chevies. The newer the adhesive the easier they are to remove.
