Shift indicator does not match actual gear.

When I purchased my my 97 aerostar the gear indicator said reverse when you were in park. Now the indicator says 2 when you are in park. I still have all my gears, but things don't match up. I tightened the torx bolts that hold the bracket which connects the shift cable under the column, but they were plenty tight. I lubricated the cable as it has always been stiff to shift, but this made no difference. What other variables are there? What else can be moved in order to allow the column indicator and transmission to match? I can't find any adjustment at the trans. I tried to loosen the large 19mm nut that mounts on the shift lever at the trans, but it does not want to move, and was half afraid if it actually did. I don't know how that would make any difference anyhow.

Help
Thanks
Jay
