2005 Expedition Heated Seat Problem

One of the heated seats in my 2005 Expedition EB shuts off after less than a minute and then won't turn back on again until the vehicle is turned off and then turned on again. The other heated seat works fine. I took it in for its 5,000 mile service and mentioned the problem--reportedly was addressed. Unfortunately, the problem still persists after picking the vehicle up.

Any ideas as to the basis of this problem?

Not that I can be much help, but my 03 EB does the same thing with the drivers side seat. However, sometimes it works perfect. I nor 2 dif dealers have figured it out as of yet.

Unhappy Heated seats

I have the same problem in my Navigator. Driver side works intermittently and requires a restart of the truck each time, passenger side is great. How/did you fix yours?

Bring it to the dealer it should not be doing that it may shutting down becuase of the thermostat keeping it from overheating.

I had the same problem with my 03. it seems that being a big guy, the air tubes used by the heat/cool system collapsed due to my weight, ergo no air flow. the system shuts down as a safety measure. the fix was to replace the seat cushion and now its as good as new. thakfully i am still under warranty and cost me zip

Guys don't forget there are two different types of seats here. If they are heated AND cooled, they are the TED type, and the ducting issues laserred mentioned apply. Otherwise, they are the resistive element type, which operate differently.

A problemmatic thermostat would be my guess here.

My 04 EB had the same problem I took it to ford and they said every thing appeared normal then one day I notice the floor mats were shoved up all the way under the driver seat (Kids) and when I when I would go to work, I would put my brief case directly behind the seat restricting any air to get under the seat causing the seat to overheat and shut down within 5 minutes, I think. Since then I fixed the floor mats and keep that space open and I have had no problems. I’m not sure if that is what caused the problem but it has worked ever since. Good luck.

2004 expedition driver side heated seat not working

After looking at a ton of these posts, I pulled my driver side seat out and brought it in the house. I took the seat cover off the bottom part only to see that mine has two TED's( heating elements) one in the seat bottom and one in the seat back with air ducts built into the seat coushins that heats up and a fan that blows air over them and into the seat back and bottom. I was expecting to see a burnt wire in the heating element like all the other posts show. I found an article
http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/ke...sb04-26-19.pdf

I went thru the steps and everything worked as far as ohms and such. So, I decided to pull the passengers side seat since it works fine and start swapping stuff one at a time as a process of elimination. I also found a couple of chilton manual climate controled seat wiring diagrams. I would like to attach them but do not know how, if you want them let me know and I will send them to you. The first swap was the fan, the driverside will spin freely and there are no broken wires and had voltage going to both sides of the wiring plug. But the problem is that it is a 4 wire fan, I put 12 volts to the black(-) and red(+) but it would not spin, I was thinking that those other 2 wires must do something to control the motor operation. So, I just went ahead and installed the passenger side fan on the driverside and it worked perfectly. Mine heater switch on the console would only stay lit for about 3 seconds. I even took a risk and plugged the drivers side into the passenger side and it still did not work. I guess I got lucky and the first thing I swapped was the problem. Now I am just looking for a new fan for the passenger side.

Check the air ducts going from the fan to the seat & back cushions. Mine was cracked 1/3 way through in the seat cushions affecting performance. However, when the seat duct was disconnected during repair, the system would shut down < 40 sec due to the TED sensing a overheat condition & would not restart until keyed off/on.
