Hey guys theres a guy over on the Ford vs comp forum that thinks lightnings are slow. He raced one an wasnt impresssed. I think you guys should reply over there an let him know what you think. Lightning gets smacked is the title off the thread.

Yep, thats my little Sonic Blue '04. I'd Wanted a Blue F-150 ever since I was knee high. I bought her brand new, she was supposed to be one of the last blue Lightnings made, they only made about 500 in that color for 04. I just cant wait for Whipple to get in gear so I can get one of their twin-screw compressors to help her “breathe” even more.

 

jb, better plan on replacing those powdered metal con rods with forged before you add that Whipple. They can't even take max boost from the Eaton 112. You did know that, didn't you?

 

Steve's joking...the PM rods are fine. Unless your planning on going 500hp, you should be fine.

 

I've been told by many that 15lbs of boost is the max the rods will safely take, any more than that and you’re gambling. I'm planning on around 12.5lbs. for the stock motor. In time I'll replace the rods and pistons while I’m at it, and have it all rebalanced.
Yes the rods are weak link of the entire power plant, but they are still good enough for now.
I’m getting the cart before the horse though, it still may be a while until I get a Whipple, or anyone else gets one for that matter. And my truck will likely remain stock through the remainder of her warranty, which will probably be two years.

 

Sonic blue is a great color jb. Its not a very common color an any truck that has it is the sharpest truck around. Nice truck I wish I owned it.

 

Thanks 150, I still can't believe I have it myself. But with a lot of savings and the help of D-pan I was able to pull it off. I love the color, except it shows dirt almost as bad as black and thanks to the constant Wichita road construction and Kansas wind, there is dust flying all the time. Thank god for Quick detailer and the California duster. But thats the price you pay for dark colors. I just wish we could get 93 or 94 octane here. All, I can get now is 91.

Yeah, I like that blue also. If I didn't get a deal on mine in white, blue would have been my choice. Mines wearing a 4lb pulley right now, but it's actually slightly more then 12lbs of boost. Probably an intake kit would make a little less boost with the same setup. Less restricting. I was beaten by a guy with a 94 Cobra wearing a Whipple putting out over 30lbs (according to him). Even though the Cobra came with forged rods, he had his rods replaced, along with nearly everything else in the engine too. The jackass missed a gear after he passed me, and it backfired so badly, he claimed to have blown a head gasket.
Too bad about no 93 octane. I thought 93 was the minimum without a tuner?

 

For the time being I have thought about getting the Eaton ported by Stig, a #4 lower, and a programmer, and then have it dyno tuned conservatively. I've been told by everyone that it really wakes these trucks up, which is impressive because I thought mine was already wide awake.
Nick, I'll work on getting a gallery going. As far as the 91 I've been told by several tuners that 91 is ok, (especially compared to the gas they have in California from what I’ve heard) but you obviously can't get the same power safely out of 91 as you can with 93 or 94.

Most of the L's we see and tune, select a 6 pound over stock, a cold air intake and a catback system with a multiple tune using the X Cal II from SCT. One for one type of octane, and one for 103 if they race. One other option is a water methanol system. Then you never need to worry about running a lower octane, since the methanol kicks it up to 120. We have had several clients that have had that option installed. Average HP for a 6 pound, CAI and catback show around 420-425 at the tire.
