400 Cam Choice

I'm rebuild a 400 in a '79 F250 i'm looking for a cam that will give me the most lope or rough idle i can get but still be a good for towing? Mods are intake, carb, header, trans with shift kit and matched conveter.

I've got the 268H from Crane with the same mods as you but with a 4 speed, use it to tow my travel trailer, 29', weighs around 6500#, pulls it with no problems, has a real lope to the idle too.

Beeboy, what other mods do u have on that engine? I installed the 265DEH cam with roller rockers and matched valve springs, 3 angle vavle job on orginal heads. Wondering what other mods I can do on the cheap (ie intake (EGR or not), carb, distrib., headers or not, etc.) How is that engine for torque (pulling power) and fuel consumption? Mine is still on the engine stand waiting to go in a 78 crewcab. I want to hear it run----rur!!!!!

not too much. its got 1971 heads, so no exhaust bumps. Had them ported a bit more anyway. Have the comp K kit, weiand intake, edelbrock 1406. Stock dizzy. Msd 6A. ARP bolts. High flow water pump. Hedman headers. I wish i had bumped up the comp ratio when I had it done.

Power wise, I think its a bit weak off the line, but tows nicely at highway speeds and on hills. I'm running 3.73 gear ratio with 31" tires.
Fuel...ummm..it sucks, literally. I think I get less than 10 with my boat behind it.

the comp 268H will work perfect for you and your mods. it has a lope at idel and will pull good from 1500 to 5000 rpm.

I've heard the 265 in a 351 and yes, it lopes pretty good at idle. I have a SpeedPro CS1085R which has the duration of the Comp 255deh, but the lift of the 265. I have an Edelbrock Performer intake, 600 cfm carb, and long tube headers. The truck has 4.11 differentials and 35" tires. Off the line, I too think it's a little soft. Once you get going though, hit maybe 1700, it starts pulling like a freight train up to about 4 grand.
