AOD/AODE difference/identification

What the easiest way to tell the difference between an AOD and an AODE transmission? I know that when it's in the truck the AODE has a push button overdrive but what if the transmission is out? I usually identify by the pan but both AOD/AODE have similar pans. I need two AOD's, one for my 90 Bronco and one for my 90 F150. Can you put an AODE in place of an AOD without much trouble? Is the AODE controlled by the computer like the E4OD or does it just have an electric overdrive. Or, should I just continue to look for an AOD only?

the aod uses a cable to adjust line pressure.the aode has a electical connection the right hand side of the trans that controls the epc pressure ,torque converter and shift solinoids.

Thanks. I knew about the TV cable on the AOD's but I'm not familiar with the AODE. I wasn't sure if the AODE used the cable and electrical connection or just electrical. I assume then that the AODE uses the computer to control it when the AOD doesn't.

Yes, that is true and I think the bell housing is a little longer on the AODE it also has a lot more plugs.

I'm pretty sure my 91 and 93 Bronco's have the E4OD transmissions while my 90 has a (still need one) AOD. But my 93 has the button on the end of the shifter while my 91 has the button on the dash.

Right, e4od has the button, aod doesn't (it isn't electronic ), aode is electronic (without a button).

What went in f-series pick-ups in 1991?
The AODE did not. It was only put in cars and never in trucks.
The 4R70W (AODE-W) was put in trucks but 1993 was the first year for it and it had the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) on the end of the gear selector lever.
The AODE and the 4R70W (AODE-W) are not the same transmission.
They have different gear ratios, output shaft sizes to name two differences but their were other differences also.
