74 390 oil capacity ??
I have owned this truck about 2 years, 74 F250 Camper spcl 390 auto.
According to my dip stick 4 quarts is full this includes the filter change. Seems strange that this is all the oil capacity the motor has, but pressure has always been good with no lifter ticks. This really botherd me when I first got the truck but have gotten used to it, Just wondering what other 390's are taking. My Haynes book says 6 Qt, think if I put all that in she would be blowing out the stick. Also back when I first got the rig whent to the FORD dealer but the stick and tube are no longer available. Had a similar deal with my 76 300, but the dealer was able to get a new stick and it was diff then the one in when I got that truck.
Any thoughts on this one??

Are you sure you have the right dipstick?
Is the oil pan dented in?

My 78 F100 has an FE 360, which is the same block as the 390. I'm not sure of the year of the motor because 360s didnt come in 78s, but I believe its a 76. It takes 6qts.

74 390 oil capacity ??
heck, when I bought my f100 w/360 I checked the oil first thing. I about died, it wasn't even on the dipstick!! (I had driven it home about 3-4 miles, no tickin', dummy gauge said I had oil pressure... I added 4 1/2 qts to bring her up to full, hasn't burned any since. Long story short, a ford will run with low oil, our chevy 454 on the other hand went three qaurts low for about 20-25 minutes and gave up the ghost.....
