Hi, have a 2000 f-150 and was wondering how hard it is to change the coil packs on it? She has a 4.6 V-8 and didn't know if it could be done when replacing spark plugs....the dealer wants about $300 each to do it....
I would only replace them when they fail. You have to remove them to get to the plugs.
Check the FAQ thread in the 97-03 forum for great tips on changing the plugs.
Exactly. Never change unitl theyre bad. I would change each boot though when you change the plugs. Most coil pack "failures" are failure in the boot not in the pack itself. They cost about $3 a piece and are well worth it.
I have a 97 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L V-8 engine. It has right at 110,000 miles on it. Recently I had the throttle body cleaned because the gas pedal had a hard place in it when you first pressed down on it after it had set for a while. That cost $108. The garage said they got almost a coffee cup full of buildup. It ran fine for a while. Now the Check Engine light has come on and it idles and runs very roughly. I took it to a garage and had it checked and they said the coil packs need to be replaced to the tune of $1,400.
Can anybody out there give me an indication as to whether or not this is what needs to be done?
Thanks for the info...never knew about the "new" design on the spark plug wires. I learned about it on here, thanks to you folks. My question, is the spark plug/coil replacement a DIY job? I think I need the #1 and # 8 ones. Thanks for your help, long time reader, first time asker.
Thanks for the info about AutoZone. I have the same question - is this a DYI job and if is where do I find the parts and how to do it?
Thanks again.
97-98 have coil packs (2, I think) and convential plug wires, 99+ have a coil on plug (COP) on each spark plug, no plug wires
