Moving Question...
K, here's the thing guys. Right now I have Arkansas plates on my truck. From my understanding, when I get up to AK, I have to have AK tags put on there. How much is it going to cost to register my truck?
Also, for those that have gasser cars, how much is emissions testing and registration?
The reason I'm asking is, I'm trying to set up a budget for when we get ready to move up there and some of the inital high cost items that need to be taken care of right away. Moving expenses if we drive, buying or renting a house, inital grocery purchase, cleaning supplies and whatnot. (This is the reason I hate moving....) And since AK tags are required, I need to throw that in there as well.
Thanks for the help!

Are you sure? Not sure what the State requirement is but usually military is exempt on the "getting state tags after being in state for so long". I think (assuming here) that you are ok as long as you are active duty. Heck everytime I go to Anchorage I see a ton of out of state tags and you see the military decal on all of those. I really find it hard to beleive that the police would even bother with that. Of course I could be wrong. Heck I spent the first 24 years of my life in the military and it was never an issue back then.
I would double check on this. Heck I wouldnt even worry about it and keep you Arkansas tags.
But to answer your question I think the fee is $110 for two years. Not sure what the emissions cost since I dont have to do it here. Diesel is also exempt but you will get a sticker with "Diesel Exempt".
Dont be shocked by the price of certain food items. If you can bring up a trailer full of watermellons, man you would be rich after selling them. $0.99 a pound here. Dont eat much watermellon since they usually cost $20. Things will be alot cheaper at the PX.
PS when is the move?

Right now it's looking like we'll be up there towards the end of March, beginning of April.
The thing about liscene plate thing is that I don't think the police would like us having AR tags, a PA and FL drivers liscense, then AK insurance. They kinda frown upon that. So, atleast two of them need to match. So, I guess we'll just have to see.
Thanks for the help though!

You do need to change your plates over within 10 days if you want to be legal. Emission testing for gas rigs is $68.00. For the Diesel you will need to take it down to the Borough and they will have you start it up so they can listen for the diesel rattle and then they will slap a Diesel Exempt sticker in the window. The exempt deal is a one time deal but the gas rigs have to be retested every two years. For The tags it will cost you $100.00 for two years. When you renew if you don't do it on-line or by mail there will be an additional $10.00 charge for walk-ins. There is also a $2.00 IM administrative fee for gas powered vehicles. You can visit http://www.state.ak.us/dmv/dmvhome.htm to get all the required forms and information on your drivers license and vehicle registration.

You don't have to convert as long as you have your vehicle registered in your state of record. Since the majority of us don't do that, and you're supposed to have atleast 2 things the same for your vehicle, (insurance, drivers license, plates), it's easier to just change over your plates. I have a nice collection hanging on my garage wall right now....Montana, PA, Florida, AR, German....

Every vehicle in Alaska is required to be registered unless specifically exempted by law. The owner of a vehicle, who is working in Alaska or is establishing residency in Alaska must apply for registration within ten days of entering the state or taking a job within the state. A non-resident may operate a vehicle with a current registration from another state for 60 days.

Crumm,
I don't want to argue but you might check Alaska DMV website before offer info.
I will post the url but if it doesn't work go to Alaska DMV.

The last thing that I read, while researching this some more, from the Eielson AFB website. IIRC, it said that I had like 30 days or something to convert to AK tags. I don't have a problem with it at all, I collect license plates from every assignment I've been on.
I was just curious as to how much it was going to cost me out of pocket when I get there to do it..... Thanks for all the inputs though guys! Mucho appreciated!
