Question F250 PowerStroke Loss in Power ... Help?

I have read through the many helpful postings ... and think i have narrowed down my problem (i think) ... Here are my symptoms: truck cranks fine, idles fine, when reving up it hesitates and jumps, when putting in gear (manual) and pulling a slight hill it gets very sluggish and jumping smokes a little, when i turn it off i smell a little un burnt deisel in the exhaust pipe and surrounding air, when driving down hill and not pushing the pedal very much i can achieve speed. When on slight hill going up it slows and starts jumping and missing (i finally got it home) ... i checked the oil level, it is not completely full but not low enough that i would see to cause hpop problems. It has never stalled on me. My first thought was clogged fuel filter or water contamination. After reading through posting i think it may be the uvc harnesses.

Im just a shade tree mechanic and this is my first deisel. What would be the first thing i should check ... im broke.

F250 Powerstroke 1999 Superduty 112000 miles
Thanks
Greg

The first thing that comes to mind when you describe you symptoms is torn o-rings in the IPR (injector pressure regulator). Fortunatly it's cheap to fix if you want to take it apart and replace the o-rings.

How do i locate the IPR? Is there a document or a labeled picture? IS there anything special i have to do to take it out to replace o-rings? I think there is an IPR rebuild kit, where is the best place to get one?

greg99,
i just installed an o-ring kit on my 2000. It takes a 1 1/8" deep socket with deep clearance (i believe it was 2 1/2") I used a black iron deep socket since they have more clearance. I show a pic or two of where it is and what is comprised. Try and plug the hole with a rag or something after you remove until you change o-rings and replace. the kit cost me $16 or so at Intl (1825806C92 IPR Seal Kit) but you should check to see if the same p/n kit applies to your 99.
hope this helps. see the pics...

I have an update ... i cranked the truck this morning to see if it still had the problem, i ran it up the road it felt like it was missing a little, steadily loss power as i tried to gain rpms .... later i replaced the fuel filter and gave it another test drive ...same thing but increasingly getting worse feels like a really bad miss ....barely got back into driveway ... i took out the IPR to see if o-rings were torn .. they seemed fine actually looked pretty clean and smooth still fitting very snug when i slid it back in. I put it back together and was just hoping that i unstuck something and it would run like a king ..... no luck it started up and i think if i had left it idleing for five seconds longer the motor would have broke off of the mounts rolled around in the yard and died.

Still no engine light, the conectors to the UVCs harnesses look ok no discoleration no hot spots, i have yet to take the VCs off ... trying to avoid it.

I have a feeling it is my HPOP or an oring or a bad fuel injector ANY IDEAS? Please.
Thanks

Question

Could it be the CMP or ICP sensors .... what are the symptoms of these being faulty?

Question Big Red?

Big Red, HAve you figured out what your problem was? ... mine sounds real similar ... except that it never runs ok .... just real rough idleing ... i have not let it die before turning the ignition off yet but i think it would die if i left it running.

I had that problem on mine, when I took off the valve covers, I noticed that the connectors were kinda melted for the plugs, of coarse this was on my 97 dually. I dont know if the 99s are the same way from your sig or not

Does anyone know how i can test the 9 pin VC glowplug/injector conections for a possible ground or short without having to remove the VCs? Just a for a real quick test wit hthe multimeter... i know that this will not rule out this problem but definately can confirm it.

HHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!!!! Please.

I have ohm out the 9pins on each VC gasket to find .8 ohms on all eight GPs and ~3.3 to 3.4 ohms on the injectors. There is no continuity to ground on the 5 middle injectors pins and no continuity to GP pins (outer 4) on either bank. ... Did not see any problems.

I STILL NEED HELP ...... PLEASE SOMEONE With any other possible suggestions.

Is it correct when the CPS goes bad it is just bad ... no gradual two day type deterioration. My engine idled fine would not increase rpm without jumping. It only hesitated/hickuped under load (pulling hill) absolutely no power .... next day could hardly pull it out of drive ..idling was getting worse ...replaced fuel filter checked IPR o-rings .... now it want even start ... sounds like it is trying to fire .. just jerks around. There is no SES light. Ive tried to pull pending codes .. there are none.

Could it be the MAP sensor?
Could it be the innercooler boots loose?
What other things can i check before i have take to the very expensive DR/Dealer?

Thanks
Greg
