Mass Air Flow with E4OD?

OK Guys, I am a Bronco owner (1992 w/ 302 and E4OD) and am looking to do a swap. I have found that the most powerful bang for the buck swap will probably be either a 351W out of a early 90's F-150 or possibly a Lightning drivetrain. I wanted to know if the 93/94 Lightning was Mass Air Flow (I hate speed density) and verify that it was EEC-IV.

Let me know if you have heard or seen this swap done and what I might need.

Thanks,
Tom

Check with NinjaPlummer here on this site. PM him he is finishing a similar swap of a 94 lightning to 92 F150 4X4. He probably has the most recent incite for you.

The lightnings were SD.

You can't easily swap to MAF with the E4OD because it's a computer controlled transmission and they don't have a MAF/E4OD setup. Look in the 87-96 forum, a search for MAF E4OD or something like that will pull up discussions about it.

Remember, you don't have to swap to MAF. You can keep it SD and tune it to work.

Banked Port versus SEFI

I am also looking at MAF for the SEFI aspect and getting rid of the banked port system.

Am I wrong in assuming that a Lightning was MAF?

What can be done about the transmission? I have seen plenty of mods that are for AOD's and am wondering about the quality of an AOD versus an E4OD and the BW1356 Electronic Transfer Case working with an AOD instead of an E4OD.

I want to build this as a great daily driver with the ability to get me in an out of my favorite hunting and fishing spots without any problems.

Only requirement from the wife is to keep it an automatic transmission.

Kemicalburns said I would do good with a standard 90-93 351W but that is still SD, but it works withs the E4OD. That is still an option but I want to know every option before I commit to one.

Your truck- what would you do- I want to keep this Bronco forever (my son is 3 and this will be his first 4x4 like my dad's Bronco was mine).

You are wrong in assuming the lightnings were not SD. See post above.

The sequential injection MAF provides is nice, but not a huge deal. Many lightning owners are running 11-12 second 1/4s with SD.

Either find a way (search the 87-96 lots of talk about this) to get the MAF/E4OD working or keep it SD. I feel it's more feasible to keep it SD then swap trans.

The AODs are fine as far as I know, and wouldn't have anything to do with the transfer case, it'll be ok to swap them.

If it were me, I'd probably get a 351 (doesn't matter which one) with whatever performance parts...a lightning SD computer, and tune it for the application.

I checked into it once before back about 1995, on a 90 f150. I wanted to install gt40 heads on mine and needed to put mass air because of the extra vacuum/fuel flow.

Researched and researched, and finally called ford motorsports. They sell a kit but it is only for the aod or manuals. The guy said it still can be done, but it would require two computers. One to run engine and other to run transmission. Lately I have seen some kits to put the e4od in older model trucks, a kit that comes with the controller like following:http://www.becontrols.com/products/products.htm

In other words, since the tranny is electronic, the eec controlled it and the engine, and there was not one made that had both mass air and e4od

You do not need mass air for GT40 heads. My truck ran fine with AFR 185s and a comp XE264HR-14 cam for years on the stock speed density(Heads will not affect vacuum)

^He's right, the only thing that can affect vacuum is the cam.

You don't need an aftermarket harness to convert to mass air. A mass air harness from a 94 and newer F-150/E40D will work just as well, and you can use a PCM, MAF and 30lb injectors, from a Lightning MAF conversion kit, to use with that stock harness
My brother and I installed a PCM, MAF and 30lb injectors, from my old Lightning MAF conversion kit, in his 94 F-150/E4OD with mass air The truck ran fine and responded well to aftermarket tuning.

However, if you find a Lightning SD PCM, then you will have more tuning options as compared to using your stock PCM.

A mildy built AOD isn't any stronger than a bone stock E4OD, and with a motor making more HP than stock, sticking with the E4OD might be a better choice.

All GEN 1 Lightnings from the factory were EEC-IV and speed density.

i have a '91 crown vic harness that i'm wiring into the OEM E4OD harness for the mass air conversion ... the hard part is getting the Computer. there seems to be a Back Order on the aftermarket updates you can get from the auto parts store. so all '94/'95 Mass Air E4OD EEC-IV are a R/R (repair and return) if there is any one who knows where i can get a F4TF-12A650-BYA ('95 Bronco 5.8 Mass Air) ?
I've heard that there were Mass air Lightings that came out in '95 whether they were a California only thing or not i'm not sure.

No, there weren't any mass air Lightnings. Ford did however make a conversion kit for those trucks and it uses and AKC0 computer.

can the lightning PCM be swapped to replace a standard F150 S/D PCM? exactly?

I haven't tried it (with the SD PCM), but I'd say it is possible...I think there are is a member or two from here that have actually swapped PCM's without any problems. The only thing the Lightning SD PCM wont support is 4wd/Lo.

actually i think it will support 4wd-lo, i recall in a 4x4 mag someone converting a lightning to 4x4 and using the stock PCM... i know for a fact my 460 2wd PCM has the LO programming. If i recall correctly a lightning was run in the '93 Mint 400 as a 4x4.
