Propane Injection

Finally got to take a road trip after installing my propane injection! I made a trip From San Antonio, Texas to Ruidoso, NM and wanted to post my findings. Got 14.75 mpg on the way there without propane, and 18.25 mpg on the way back with propane. Both ways were @ 75 mph with the cruise control set. Also used 6 gallons of propane on the way back, so total fuel mileage was actually 15.75 mpg. So I not a huge increase in overall mileage, but a MONSTEROUS increase in power! The truck never slowed or downshifted even on the big hills, and EGT's ran about the same. I'm still in the tweaking phase, so hopefully it will get even better, and I should be able to get to the Dyno soon. I will post more findings in the future, but so far this has been the largest power gain I've done, hands down...

Well Max, you need to put that right foot on a diet. Bring her down around 65-68 and you should see a better result. Your mileage at 75 is pretty good. Were you towing,or just out cruising?

Hard to run 65 when the speed limit is 75, but I'll try, lol... I wasn't pulling anything, but had a load on the truck (about 8300# total) This system was designed by a friend of mine (Jack Harrison and Associates). He has been in the propane industry for over 25 years and he came up with his own setup. We are still trying to refine it and add some safeguards, but it it has been installed on 30+ trucks without a problem. I want to add a boost relay to keep it from injecting under about 5 psi, which shopuld let it use less propane when not under a load. Would like to be able to market a simple, reliable, yet cost efficient alternative to some of the big name brands.

So far, not a thing. I do trade out with him on some other stuff. I'm getting him to put a price together on it though. The tank is the most expensive part. Drop me a line some time, we're practically neighbors. txmax1(@)msn.com or sts_performance(@)msn.com

awesome, thanks a bunch. i just noticed from your gallery that the propane was on a '99....i thought it was on your '97. i'm guessing the setup will work just as good on a 'OBS though. no real difference, just the fine tuning i suppose.

Max, didn't you have a PS2K kit??? or am I thinking of some one else???

just get yourself a pressure switch, one off of a water tank will work if you dont care what it looks like, set it to make contact ot 5 psi, no more 'pane below 5 psi.

again, if ya want another "volunteer" I will test one out, dont know many people that can run there truck as hard as me, (maybe its cuz the bank owns em)
I will put it to the riggors.

on edit, is it a variable feed, or on/off. and is it all vapor, or liquid to the engine bay, vapor after that??? or are you not allowed to coment on it yet for testing reasons???

With pane and the increase in HP, would adding water/meth to the mix help EGT's? Or, would that be a no-no having pane & water/meth together?

I've had a Powershot2000 Propane injection kit on my truck for quite some time now, but haven't used it in about a year, since installing larger injectors on my '95 PSD.

With TYMAR intake and Superchips single chip, my dyno run was 206 RWHP...with the propane OFF, and I then ran with the propane ON, and it gave me a result of 289 RWHP!
There definitely is quite a boost in power with the propane injection systems, and with the PS2000 system, its just a matter of flipping the switch and its instantly there.
Of course it runs on "boost" the way I had it set, so for regular street use, I would have it come on a 5 PSI of boost, and when towing, I had it set to come on at 10 PSI of boost, which usually meant that it would kick in as I was about to climb a hill...while towing.

Worked real slick! I suppose I should pull it off one of these days, as I have more than enough fuel now with my injectors.

I should mention...for anyone wishing to go this route, that it is important for you to have a pyrometer, to keep an eye on the EGT's....especially when towing! There again...most of you know this anyway.

I've had some conversations with Quadzilla, and Cookie about various ideas concerning propane. Quad runs pane only, and Cookie runs pane and water injection. They told me that the pane needs to have an advanced timing curve to work really well. And that pane and water injection would work fine, but not with Methenol, because it too needs advanced timing.
So, I'm leaning towards a pane setup with water injection, and a modified custom chip. That's the ticket.

Actually, that's backwards. Programming, whether through a chip or tuner, would need to have less fuel timing advance when using propane, since the propane acts as an advancing agent. It actually starts to "pre-burn" in the cylinder before the diesel in injected.

Max1775- You didn't say how big your propane tank is, nor how many miles you actually drove to empty it, but I'd venture a guess that you've got a lot of propane flowing. I have a tank that holds 8 gallons of liquid propane, and it typically lasts me 2000-2500 miles in everyday driving.

Powerstroke2000 - are the dyno numbers with the larger injectors? I wasn't clear on whether the numbers shown were for stock injectors or not. I guess I was expecting to see a bit higher HP figures on pane above all else you've done.

Let me know if you decide to part with the PS2000....

We have propane on both now. We did the 99' a long time ago, it actually belongs to a friend of mine who is nice enough to let me test stuff on his too (hadn't blown anything up yet...). Gonna get custom burned chips for both, should really help. Gonna have to start looking for a tranny also...
