92 Explorer transmission shift cable
Having trouble shifting; sometimes I could and somestimes I couldn't. I thought the problems started after I let my 17 year old son drive it for a few days. I thought he might have jerked the shift handle hard and broke or bent something in the steering column. After two days of my spare time used disassembling the steering column and not finding anything broke, I look closer under the hood and the transmission linkage. I noticed full range movement from the column mounted shift handle out to the end of the steering column. I noticed that if I pushed the transmission likage by hand the column shifter would get it back to park? This happens because moving the column handle from the drive position to the park position pushs the cable. When moving the column shift handle from park to any other position pulls the cable. So I have a broken cable. And I did say I put the blame on my 17 year old son, turns out I burnt it into while jump starting other vehicles I have. Ford now makes this cable with plastic ends so it won't carry a ground. Hope this helps someone out with like problem.
