98 f150 electrical problems.

I have a 1998 f150 4x4 with a 5.4. The gas gauge is always stuck on full, and my four wheel drive will not engage. Has anyone experienced these problems? Is it a matter of fuses or something else? Thanks in advance.

hmm...I'm not really much for electrical yet, but isn't there a sensor that sort of floats in the gas tank that tells you how much fuel you have? You might check this, it could be stuck in the full position.

It could be fuses but I dont think fuel gauge and 4x4 are tied into the same circuit. But doesn't hurt to check the fuses tho. And don't forget to check the fuses under the hood as well.

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong but a constant full fuel guage indicates either a bad sending unit or bad ground to the sending unit. Do you have a manual 4x4 lever or the on the fly switch?

I don't know if the two problems are related or not. I know in PA we have had some "bad" gas recently that has ruined a lot of sending units in all makes of vehicles. This has something to due with the chemical composition of it. Have you heard anything like this in you area?

As for the four wheel drive...the actuator might not be engaging. You can check this by removing the cover and having some one turn the swith while you watch the piston. Have to be careful though because the engine needs to be running. I just replaced one on a 98 for this reason.
