1981 F250 351W fuel pump install problems

I hope someone can give us some feedback...

We are replacing the fuel pump on the above mentioned truck, and having no end of problems, mostly due to the extremely difficult positioning of the (mechanical) pump on the block.

We want to make sure we are positioning the rocker arm correctly, but can't seem to get any feel for the proper place. We are rotating the camshaft now and again to try and get the arm inside so that it runs on the underside of the eccentric, but it seems that no matter where we rotate the engine, the arm won't go in enough to allow us to get the flange of the pump in position to bolt it to the block. The best we can do is to have the flange about 1/2+" below where it should be, but in contact w/ the block, and the lower part of the flange a good inch or so away from the block. But the arm does seem to be under "something". HELP!!!

We need this truck operational!! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks... Tduck

It may be necessary to remove the power steering pump to be able to get a good view of the install area, but the fuel pump can usually be installed without pulling the p.s. pump. It will be necessary to push up on the fuel pump pretty hard to push down the fuel pump actuator rod enough to line up the bolt holes with the engine. It is always pretty hard to push the fuel pump up, but try rotating the engine in quarter turn incraments until it will go in the farthest, then install the pump with the rod going in so that you are sure the rod goes below the cam eccentric and force it up until you can get the bolts in. Most times the fuel pump rod won't be physically able to go over the cam eccentric so you really can't get it in that way. The rod has to keep constant pressure on the eccentric so that it doesn't make a noise, so it's always going to be sprung.

I am looking for some advice on replacing the eccentric fuel pump on a 1980 351W. I have had some folks inform me that the eccentric is two pieces and some say only one. Can someone clarify this for me. The motor is actually in a 1980 MasterCraft ski boat. The short block is all the same as the trucks. The timing chain cover is cast ad becomes the water pump. Please advise.

To the OP:

A little trick I do is to install some 3/8" x 2" long studs (set screws) in the timing cover. Install gasket and just push on the fuel pump, then put on some serrated nuts. Works great and no alignment problems or fighting the arm pressure to get bolts started. It will be right every time.
