Expedition dies when coming to a stop!!

Hey guys, I was just wanting to ask for your opinions on this. I've had my Expedition E.B. since October (I think) and about once or twice a month it will just die whenever I come to a stop. Usually I just throw it in park and restart it and then put it back in drive and go on my way. A couple of times, including earlier today, it died and everytime I put it in gear it would die again. So I would restart it, put it in gear and it would jump forward a bit then just die. The odd thing is that when it is in park or neutral, it is fine, not even a rough idle. I don't get it.
It kind of scared me because today was the worst that it has done this. I'm afraid that it's going to do this and I'm not going to be able to get it going again. Any suggestions?

If you are in park will it idle? If not I would say its the idle control valve. My 99 Expedition E.B. would not idle. Got it to the dealer and asked the service rep come and see what it was doing. He said "I already know whats wrong. We have replaced 100
's of them". He also said that the older ones they could take a part and clean, but the newer ones they could not take a part, they had to be replaced. Hope it helps...T

Assuming you have no warranty on the vehicle...

Had a similar problem with the '97 Expy we used to own. Fix was as simple as changing the fuel filter. Guess there wasn't enough fuel flow with the extra load on the engine at idle with the tranny in gear.

If that doesn't fix your problem, maybe a trans fluid change will help. Sounds like the torque converter isn't unlocking, so fresh fluid may help free it up.

I used to have a 92 S10 Blazer with the Vortex V6 and it did the same thing as yours is doing. Turned out to be a plugged EGR.

The most likely candidate is a bad IAC (Idle Air Control) sensor.

The expy will idle perfectly when in park or neutral, no stutters or anything. This is what's confusing me.
My warranty is up, so unfortunately I can't get it fixed for free.
I'll see about changing the fuel filter and tranny fluid and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it I'll have to have someone check the EGR and IAC.

Thanks for the responses, if you come up with anything else let me know.

I have 2 Expeditions that had the same issues. It turns out that the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) on Expeditions get dirty or clogged very frequently. I sprayed some Throttle Body Housing Cleaner (Make certain you purchase the one that doesnt affect the protective film) into the throttle Body and the issue cleared up immediately on both. Being a intermidant problem it was unclear if it truely worked but 2500 miles oin both and not even a shutter. Several friends that have Expeditions experienced the same stalling issues and recommended this fix to me.

Just be certain whatever cleaner you use has the phrase "Safe for Oxygen Sensors" on the container.

I think he is unlikely to answer you, the last time he was here was almost 6 years ago. Usually when a thread starter doesn't come back it is because they fixed the problem and don't need to discuss it anymore (or thank the people who helped them). If you are having the same problem, you can't go wrong with trying a $7 fix that takes 15 minutes to do.

I don't know, but if I were you I'd save my money and not bother with lottery tickets this week, your luck just isn't happening!
