I have a 99 awd with a 5.0L and was wondering if it would pull a full size pickup on a car dolly? It's 6 hours one way.Has anybody else done this?

 

well the motor could handle it tranny may not and sorry to say the explorer would not... that is tooo much bumper weight on your explorer the truck will push you bad down hills and if it gets squirly you can kiss you exp bye bye!

I once use a 16 ft tag to haul home some lumber 20 4x6's(cured deck boards) and it was a slow ride 45mph and 3rd gear and truck was weighed down bad

 

Even though the owners manual says it can tow 5500 pounds? Thanks...

 

U-Haul has a dolly limit of 3900# for RWD towed vehicles; don't know if anyone else has higher limits.

Is this a one time thing, or are you planning to do this on a regular basis? For a one time thing or in emergencies, you're probably ok. If I were looking to do this on a regular basis, I would strongly consider a bigger tow vehicle for that job.

 

uhaul will not rent you any trailer to tow behind a ford explorer, they say they have way to many problems with them towing and rolling over. a full size pickup is to wide to tow on a car dolly on any uhaul trailer for that matter. in addition to my radiator shop i am also a uhaul dealer.

 

Thanks for the replies, U-haul doesn't have a dolley that will work for a truck so I'm borrowing a friends truck and trailer.

 

good move six hour drive is to long for that much weight

I don't see "rolling over" mentioned; just that this policy is not related to safety issues.

according to our corporate they got tired of paying out on insurance claims for explorers damage by 'jackknife and rollover'. would you admit to safety issues

It sounds more like a driver error/experience problem. Also, most people who rent a U-haul trailer don't have trailer brakes! I can see where you wouldn't want to install them for a 1-time tow, but U-haul should first see whether or not the drivers can handle a trailer or not. They must get a surprise riding their car brakes down that first hill and find that they don't work when they reach the bottom, and so therefore flip the car. Also, most people don't pay much/any attention to overloading (BIG MISTAKE!!!) and simply overload it.

 

trailers that need it have surge brakes installed. if it was 'driver error' dont you think it would effect more than the explorer

 

It probably does but since there are more explorers than another midsize SUV on the planet the number of accidents with Explorers is disproportionately high if you only look at the number of accidents for the explorer compared to others. If you looked at the number of accidents per given number of rentals of a particular type of vehicle then you will get the actual risk. Oh well I will just go borrow my neighbors Mountaineer so I can rent from them
