I need removal of California emissions for dummies!

Hi guys,

This is such a great site I can't believe it!
I have a 1990 Ford E-250 4X4 Van with 7.5L 460EFI and E4OD tranny.
I bought the van off of eBay from a guy in California. I get the same gas mileage as a 747 jet. I get around 7-8 mpg. It has Dana 60 diffs 4:10 and 28.5 tires. I would love to remove the California emissions but I keep hearing different ways to go about it. Does anyone know for sure how to do it? Does anyone have any other tips to increase gas mileage?

Welcome to FTE and the Virginia Forum,

I don't know the answer to the emission question, but maybe doing a tune-up (plugs, wires, distrubtor/cap, filters (fuel and air), etc... could help with gas mileage.

P.S Just a little FYI, there is a lot of info on the FTE Site, and a lot of intelligent people on the different forum pages, maybe posting in the 460 engine forum, somebody could further help on both gas mileage and emission questions.

With a 460 and 4.10 gears you are probably lucky to be getting 7-8 mpg. What are your RPMs at highway speeds?

I would think twice before removing it. Many states are adopting the California Emission standards. Your state may not be now, but you never know in a few years.

I don't know the rpms. I want to install an after market tach, but I am unsure how to.

Tachs are easy. You just tap into the ground wire for the coil (usually green wire). They also need a 12v power and some have a wire for instrument lights.

An aftermarket tach will have good instructions.
