7.3 oil cooler O - ring replacement
Hey I was wondering if anyone had changed the o rings on the oil cooler cylinder on a 95 powerstroke. Mine is leaking and is getting worse, was wondering if it can come apart from the rear by pulling the oil filter adapter. I know i gotta drain the coolant, but all data says that I haver to pull the fan/shroud to get at it. Anyone tried this one? Thanks for any help Josh

The oil cooler is located behind and under the vacuum pump and powersteering pump right to the block. If you look under your truck find your oil filter and right above it and forward of it. Round cylinder looking thing. I don't know if its common for them to leak internaly but its a possibilty.

I find it easier to remove the entire cooler assembly togther. Put in a vise and remove the front and rear sections. Clean the cooler itself and housings. Install new o-rings with eng assembly lube (helps w/ installing the housings back on). Ive been lucky one time to have both housings go on w/o putting them in a press. Be careful you can break the aluminum housings.

A bit of oil cooler info:
O-rings and gaskets available here:Oil Cooler Seal Kit at Dieselorings
Some can push the headers on by hand but I couldn't. I used a bar clamp doing one end at a time. If you have clamps that fit on a 1/2" pipe that would be more suitable. The bar clamp flexed a bit and was just barely up to the task.
