blown 4.6 and 5.4's

hey guys, i am normally in the 48 - 60 forumn but this is more up your alley.
i have a new 4.6 quad cam cobra engine and have just been offered a complete blower setup that they use on the "cobra R "engines, because we don't have these in Australia it's hard to know if it will make that much difference, i beleive the kit does not include camshafts, r these different ?, they also had 5.4 blown lightning motors, one of which is a factory loose fit, i have not heard this term before, is anyone familiar with what they may use this to measure and how they do it? no one else has used these blown motors down here yet, so i would like to have a crack at one, i just don't want to get burnt, air freight for parts can get real dear after a while.
has any one had first hand experience with these motors or know where i could get reliable information?

Hey man, I kinda of new to this website. I've never herd of such a thing. Did you try the Ford racing web site? they have a spot their that has there performance stuff. Like super chargers, Blowers if you like, for the 4.6, 5.4, and the 2.0. They have both roots type and centrifugal, I think that's how you spell it. later

i tried ford once before on another project, all u get from customer service is quiet!!, i don't think they r really interested in one offs or small numbers, hopefully there is a workshop over there that specialises in these engines that could offer some assistance.

As far as I know they never offered blowers on the Cobra R's. Do you know what company the blower is made by?

Did they ever make a Cobra R with the 4.6? I thought they all had a 5.8 in them. At least the 2 that I have seen came with a 5.8/351. Special install, and I don't think they were street legal. These were factory Ford Mustangs.

The only motors available in the Cobra R's were 5.0L (1993 cobra R), 5.8L (95 cobra R), and the 5.4L 4v (2000 cobra R) and I think all cobra R's produced were streel legal. ( as far as I know )

Below is a quote on the 95 Cobra R........

You won’t see a lot of Cobra Rs at the drive-in, either. Ford's Special Vehicle Team only built 250, to be sold through SVT-authorized dealers only to those able to show membership in a relevant sanctioning body and evidence of a serious intent to race the car. Yes, friends, it’s a factory Q-ship, an IMSA terror with license plates. And with 300 horsepower moving 3300 pounds, as Mr. Elliott would say, the car rips.

I guess that means that you could possibly drive one on the street.

the complete set up that i saw certainly appeared to be from a 4.6, what i need to find out though is what heads they ran ( 2 or 4 valve) and then what cam shafts.
one kit is brand new the other is from a test engine, they had explained that there were only around 300 built, but were not sure on the power specs, the new cobra engine i have is a 2002 build and rated at 260 kw, if the muzzy is only 300 hp, then this would seem a step backwards, even though i am not sure of the formula to convert kw to hp, i do realise that 300hp, blown or not still does not equate to 260kw. i did notice while there new harley blowers for the 5.4 and complete 5.4 lightning motors, can u get these to crack? or would they just be a show thing incapable of towing a loaded car trailer?

If you need to know anything about hopping up the overhead cam engines from Ford, contact Sean Hyland Motorsports. In my opinion, they are the first and foremostcompany for "mod motor" performance. They have anything you need, including tech help and parts. The stock 5.4 Lightning engine is capable of amazing performance, since it is fairly mild in stock form. There's are many more ponies to be had, limited only by the powdered metal connecting rods. Mine was a 99, and was rated at I think, 20 horsepower less then the 2001 and up models. If you obtain the complete package with all electronics, intercooler, and all the goodies that make it work, you would be more then happy with it. I towed my boat and trailer all over the east coast, even though it weighed way more then the stated towing capacity of the truck. Sounds like a foolish thing to do if you go by the numbers, but I wouldn't even turn off the overdrive while towing, and didn't have the annoying constant downshift and upshift that some trucks experience when hauling a heavy load. Of course it also had a tough rear end, and a transmission stuffed with the guts from a Powerstroke diesel transmission. The engine always stayed cool, and the only problems I had with it, were keeping my speed at a sane rate, and taking all the people for a ride who asked for one. The sound of that blower is sweet, and was the first thing that people would hear while I was heading towards them. I don't advocate this, but I held it at 140 on an interstate for at least 2 hours. Only slowing down for dealing with traffic, or when the radar detector went off. I had the A/C cranked and the CD changer playing the tunes the whole time. SVO put together an awesome package for the second generation Lightning. It was twice the truck my 1st gen 93 Lightning was, and the 93 was a great truck on it's own. If you want to beef it up a little and make it more durable, get the aftermarket connecting rods that SHM sells, or any other source you can find. The 4.6 Cobra 4 valve DOHC engine is a great engine in it's own right, but it has to wind out a little higher to make it's power. I've never driven a Cobra with a power adder, but you need to get used to one before you get onto it hard. The back end of the one I drove would break lose pretty easy at speed if you pushed it in the turns, and it was pretty hard to make it hook up from a dead stop. The Cobra took a little more driver input and skill to get the most out of it. To me, the Lightning was more user friendly, and was as at home in the turns as it was in a straight line.
