Well I'm glad I didn't take my 96 4x4 crew cab out yesterday. The front axle isn't engaging for some reason. In neither 4hi or 4low. I think it maybe the hubs but I don't want it to be ( $$$ ). I also found out the clutch in my Subaru is going too, stinks to high heaven when thrashing it.

I'll check with the clutch,tranny, etc and 4x4 forums. Maybe even the super/heavyduty forum.

If you guys have any idea, please give me your 2 cents.

How about some more info... F150, F250?

Automatic hubs? Manual hubs? The automatics are prone to failure, eventually.

Did the '96 offer shift-on-the-fly and, if so, do you have it?

If you put the t-case in 4wd and attempt to drive forward, do the hubs click?

We can help narrow it down if you give us more info.

Sorry alittle more info would have helped. 96 F350 Crew cab 4x4 w/460 (not heavyduty). auto hubs. auto tranny. shift on fly. I hear a loud clunk when in 4WD. After many beers and alot of sitting on my ****. I think it maybe the hubs. I do know they are a problem for Ford. It may have been the cold and lots of snow we had.

Eric, i thnk either you will need to clean and re-grease them or the plastic inside the hubs are shot..best bet is to replace with warn hubs $50-75 at napa fairly easy to change out.Ive done my own about an hour to do them both..and maybe they make a auto hubs too...I'll check there web site and post a link to what you need..

Kit #11690 this part # is for the srw not the true dually.there is also online instructions if you want to see what you need to do to change them out.

on a side note, one advantage to going manaul hubs is that you can use 4wlow without locking the hubs for stump pullin on dry roads.

I just had the hubs greased less than a year ago, when I had my brakes done. A Ford tranny specialist said that those hubs are weakest link for my truck and replacing with the Ford part would cost me alot. I'll have to get one of my friends to look under my truck while it's in 4wd and I will almost bet that they will work then. With your comments on the "stump pulling" really puts another vote for manual hubs, like I didn't already feel I needed to go that way anyhow.

Just so you know i'm looking for an auto hud replacement on my superduty (same axle as yours) besides ford, i like having the auto feature, but the one that ford uses it too **** to failure. so far i can't find a warn auto-hub version only manaul ones. let us know what you find out.

 

It may take awhile for me to get hubs for my truck. It needs a complete exhaust. I have bad manifolds too. I'm thinking of taking my truck back to a SRW instead of the faux dually setup i have now. It just shakes alot, even with new tires on it. Plus when I hit that dear on I-75 going about 65mph it cracked a rear fender and it almost took off the tire rack on my car trailer. We'll see, I just have to wait untill spring so I can do some work on my vehicles. All four of my vehicles needs attention. My Omni GLH (RallyCross car) needs a tranny and dampers.

For some reason the sentence "It just shakes alot even with newon it." didn't post right. It's actually should be reading "It just shakes alot even with new tires on it.
Went through quick reply, then edited it and try to reedit it. and still came out like that.

 

I know it's a HAUL from where you are, so I'll just use it as an example. I had a place in Fredonia, Pa. put a stainless exhaust system on my '87 and it lasted me nearly five years (sold the truck, exhaust is still fine).

Two guys at work turned me onto this place. One had the exhaust on his Chevy for nine years at the time he recommended them (and the exhaust is doing better than the rest of his truck :0). The other guy and I were just talking about this place a few weeks ago. He had them put a stainless exhaust on his truck 26 years ago and it is STILL on there!! YES, no misprint, his DAILY WINTER driver has had the same stainless exhaust for 26 years!

Mind you, this is no show exhaust, it looks kinda ugly, actually. But...it works!

Fredonia is a middle-of-nowhere town between Pittsburgh and Erie, but maybe you can find a place near you.

Oh, btw, my system, single 3" with muffler (the '87 HD's had no cat) from the manifolds and exit behind the right rear tire was $180. I paid for 3 'aluminized' exhaust systems prior to that and paid $150 for EACH of them!! The Ohio winters tore them up in one year and I got tired of paying for it!

The hub problem is not new.I had problem with my 96 and switched over the inside with a kit by Superwinch.This is manual but positive lock & unlock.
Change time about 1 hr unless you break the allen bolts that hold them on. Best thing is pick up the bolt kit also. I think total cost about $75.
I bought mine at TRAIL CITY in MT VERNON OH 740-392-6072 ask for AL.
If bolts break off they have to be drilled out and retapped This can be tegious. Use anti seize on new bolts to prevent rust.

Yep, Yep and Yep to all they above. I was making a long right hand turn into a parking spot. Then klunk. By the time I could say anything, it did it again. So I put it in reverse to straighten out the truck. It hasn't happen since.

I was actually picking up a new half barrel for a new years party. I think I still have about 4/5 of it left. Everyone there brought a bottle of liquor or two, which I can't drink anymore. So hardly anyone drank the beer. Oh well, more for me.
