Please Help!! Powerstroke Turbo For 89 Ih 7.3 Diesel

Please Help!! Powerstroke Turbo For 89 Ih 7.3 Diesel

I have a 1989 ford f250 4x4 diesel 5 speed with the 7.3 international diesel. I am wanting to add more power by getting a turbo. Can I buy the manifolds and turbo from a powerstroke diesel and bolt them onto the 7.3 international I have, or do i have to buy an aftermarket turbo and manifolds? PLEASE HELP!

Your best bet is to add a turbo, but it would be easier to add an aftermarket turbo made FOR the Internationals, by a company like CTS, ATS, or Banks. I dont recomend Banks.

There is a guy who makes adapters to fit a Powerstrok turbo onto the IDI's, but you would still have to buy a few things to get it to work. A problem would be fitting the exhaust into the engine bay without it hitting on the firewall. The factory turbos had 2.25" exhausts, but 3" at the least is needed. The Powerstrokes' turbos have a larger turbo downpipe on it, somewhere around 3-4", Im not sure, that would hit the firewall, unless you pounded it in witha hammer or did a body lift.

Try Hypermax.com They are in Illinois had one of thier kits on an old international S-1600 straight truck it was great. I think kits are priced pretty reasonable.

Yep, that is my truck, black 86 flatbed dump, 4x4, snowplow, front air bags, strobes, 7.3 turbo, 4 speed, stainless steel west coast mirrors, chrome stacks, Pioneer CD FM stereo, APC high intensity headlights, headlight relays, LED lights in everything else, custom air intake, oversized fuel tanks, manual oil guage, pyrometer, boost guage, volt meter, electric brake controller. Ford built a great truck in 86, in the last several years it has become an even greater truck. I am working on a new Dana 60 front axle for it right now, trying to figure out if I am going LS or Locker in it. I have the dash apart thinking about a custom dash for it real hard, with all the stuff I have in there now I am running out of room for more. Then I am going to install a six speed tranny.

I have the Dodge boys on the run and the Chevy guys stay on the porch. I may have to sneak a propane tank in there somewhere so I can flame the Dodge boys after I blow their doors off when the six speed is in it. Only bad thing is I have no place for the switches for it.
I love my Ford truck, can you tell?
One more year of warranty on the motor before the real fun begins.

Thanks for the compliment on my old ride, 300,000 miles and I like it better every day I drive it.

well dave, it seems that truck not only looks good, but runs good too. i would like to do some of the same things you have done to my truck also, but at 17 workin 40 hours a week at a welding shop tryin to keep the farm life above water, it's kinda tough. After seeing your truck last night, I sit and pondered on where i could find a flatbed, and just so happens, on my way to school this morning, I FOUND ONE. I stopped and asked the guy if it was for sale, and he looked me in the eyes and said "son if there is anything left to that bed, you can have it" come to find out, the only thing left to the once quality Hillsboro bed was the 2 main frame rails and a headache rack. Luckily the old farmer said i could have the bed if I would just get it out of his field. I am one step closer to getting my truck to look like yours. I ordered the new metal today to restore my Hillsboro bed. Sooner than I figured, my truck will look more and more like yours. Even though they will look the same, performance wise I won't be able to hold a candle. I just figured I would let you know that. Thanks for the pictures, now the work will begin on my truck. I will keep you updated on my progess.

The after market ATS put on my truck in '91 had a 3" exhaust. The fire wall flange was hammered flat to obtain the necessary clearance, which I understand is the same solution used by ATS when they did the aftermarket Ford installations at their factory. On my first road trip with a load I had to take a bar and bend a little more clearance in the firewall because the pipe vibrated against it. I don't know if the new aftermarket wastegate ATS turbo for the 7.3 IDI has the same clearance issues but it is designed specifically to fit on these trucks.

Whats wrong with Banks? It does its job doesn't it? I Know a truck that had a Banks turbo on it in alabama that had 201 hp at the rear wheels. last I knew Freighttrain owns it.

I wish I knew where I could put mine on a dyno at. I do believe my ATS does better than that at factory fuel settings.
The engine dyno sheet from the day it was assembled showed 223 HP @ 3200 and 420 Ft. Lbs @ 1900. It runs way better now that it has some miles on it.

TexsDixieDiesel, you have lots of time to work on your truck, be patient and it will all come together. I have been working on mine for a long time to make it what I really want. Every time I wear something out or break it, I replace it with something better.
You have to do a lot of research and planning to not work against yourself though.

Dave, not sure how close to Carlisle,PA you are but for 75 bucks you can have a true rear wheel dyno run. 2 attempts

Thing i would watch is the rotating assembly. The powerstroke has much larger connecting rods than our IDI's do.

Carlisle is a far haul for me, I am about 100 miles south of Pittsburg just off I-79.
I hope to have a six speed in mine by next fall, that would be a lot easier trip with the overdrive tranny.

Someone has said there is one up near Pittsburg somewhere, I just have not found out where yet.
