I want to make comparison between Ford Stock V10 in the F250 and Dodge Stock V10 in the 2500, not the SRT-10. I would like to hear your point of views on these engine and how durable and reliable each one is. Thanks for the responses and Happy Holidays to all of you here at FTE.

I don't think Dodge is making a V10 in the current Ram. I could be wrong, but I think the new HEMI 6.1 coming out is supposed to fill that void.

 

There is currently no V10 offered in the Ram, like bigbluebronco43 said. I guess this is an easy one, the Ford wins!

I don't know... the dodge v10 i rode in felt like it had an edge over the same year ford. mind you i haven't been in the new 3v ford yet

 

I dont want to compare with the 3v V10. I want to compare the 2v the dodge V10. Which one had more ooooopmh.

 

Dodge dropped the V10 in 03 for the 6.1 HEMI option listed above. I don't know which V10 I would take. They are not all that common anyhow. But if the SRT-10 V10 was an option I would definately choose that. Nothin like a good old American NA motor!

 

The old Dodge V10 was a torque monster. I have the data for it from the 2001 Ram model year. The displacement is 8.0L. That year it was rated for peak 310hp @ 4000rpm and 450lb-ft @ 2200rpm!!

Consider this-the 2003 Ford V10 is taed to make about 375lb-ft at 1500 rpm. The old Dodge V10 for that year was rated for 430lb-ft at 1500rpm!! The whole torque curve is super flat-it makes over 400lb-ft from 800rpm to 5000rpm!!!!!

Nobody is making gas engines like that anymore. Ford's V10 and the GM 8.1L don't come close to having that kind of low-rpm pulling performance. Dodge had everybody beat and still does if you want a gas engine to put out torque at lower engine speed.

The downside-the mileage is/was truly awful. My dad's neighbor pulls a livestock trailer with his. I think it's a 98. It is a reg cab long bed 4x4 with 4.10s and he gets 8 to 9 mpg unloaded and about 5 or 6 towing. I think that's why Dodge dropped it. I've taken a few trips with him-the engine and tranny is noisy and it always started hard-especially in cold weather. I'd call it a big, unrefined and powerful towing engine.

Sorry I know u wanted '99 info but that's all I've got. Fords V10 makes a better daily driver IMO. It's quieter, smooth and has way better acceleration off the line. If you want to compare towing performance I'd say the Ford V10 would probably win in alot of categories but the old Dodge V10 could tow real heavy, real steady and slow and not even seem to be working. It's not an engine I'd want but the guys who have them love 'em and they run forever (as long as the Dodge tranny holds up!).

 

umm the dodge v10 is more powerful its kinda a different category engine more comparable to gm's 8.1 v-8 problem is either of the v10's gets very very bad milegae but im sure u know that already or else u wouldnt be considerign them so if u got money to boot for the gas then id go dodge v10

 

Ford's v10 get's better gas mileage than Chevy's 8.1L. It's a logical comparison because the Dodge is 8.0L, which is 0.1L SMALLER than the bowtie.

 

oh yeah i nkow that but i mean both motors arent gas savers by any means and because the choice has been made to get these large gassers and obviously mileage is not the issue then id just go with the dodge v10 u can prolly find the dodge v10 for cheaper as well whether u get 9 mpg with the dodge or 12 with the ford is irrelevant

 

other then the extra 2 cylinders we only have only 6 cubic inches between them. i have not checked the mpg reports but know the ford v10 and gmc 8.1 feel pretty close on a road test, ordered the ford v10 for my new one . i personally feel that each person has his or her choice but then we are a bunch of die hard ford fans here, sorry mopar guys! here we have a run for cubic inches going on ford 415 or 6.8 l. dodge 490 or 8.0 l, gmc 496or 8.1 l this would be a very good drag race to see who's best can gm do with 8 what the others have 10 for. would love to see it happen

 

Truck trend did the test a year or two (or three) ago. The Ford V10 held its own against Dodge and GM handily. The 6.8 won most of the empty drag races and beat the Dodge when loaded/pulling. The 8.1 did pull ahead of both when loaded. Fuel economy was within 1-2 mpg.

As with everything else, drive 'em both and see which one YOU like best.

 

Hey I saw that article. They tested 2001 heavy-duty gassers. Chevy 8.1L, Ford 6.8L and Dodge 8.0L V10. All similar configs and 2001 was the last year Dodge offered the V10 to the general public. It was still listed as being available for 2003 Commercial sales in the 305hp/440lb-ft version. The results went something like you said already:

Unloaded acceleration, the 6.8L beat the 8.1L by a very small margin 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile. The 8.0L V10 finished third by a fairly wide gap.

Towing acceleration, the 8.1L V8 beat the Triton V10 by a very small margin in an on-ramp test and 1/4 mile. The V10 8.0L Ram finished third.

I've seen guys on some of thge various forums claim the Dodge V10 is faster accelerating than a similar Ford V10. Nope. I've had some experience with both and...no way. The Dodge may beat the Ford V10 off the line towing heavy and I'm very certain it'll pull hills towing at lower engine speed but unloaded a Ford or Chevy/GM will wipe it out.

It seems like Dodge's V10 takes longer to rev whereas the Ford spins up to 4000rpm instantly if you bury the pedal.

This has been a good thread. I'm not a Dodge fan but I always liked their V10. Too bad they didn't keep it and put some work into it to modernize it for emissions and mileage standard, but maybe it just wasn't feasible. The 8.0L and the 318 V8 are the best engines Dodge ever offered for a pickup. I had a Ram 318 5-speed and it had a bunch of low-end torque and with the 5-speed it was just a blast to drive. Unfortunately the engine was the only good part of the truck, which was plagued with problems until I dumped it out of disgust a year later.
