Mods to 460 for towing and MPG

I have not really found any way to make a measurable improvement in fuel economy aside from swapping to a smaller ci engine or de-stroking the 460. As for the towing cam, a good low/mid RPM torque grind will help, maybe something similar to a Lunati 00096. I ran one for a few years with great results towing.

carb solution
i have a 76 F-150 with a 78 460 in it. when i first put it in it only got about 8 mpg with the stock motorcraft 4bbl on it..... it had no torque and run crappy.. i bought a 780 vac sec holley and tweaked the timing a touch... now i get between 12 to 15 mpg as long as i keep my foot outta the pedal.. and there is plenty of torque for whatever i need to pull... i made no other mods to the motor but the carb... no one believes how much torque it has till they drive it... then their opinion changes also i only run premium unleaded.. regular unleaded makes it run rough...

Be careful swapping cams on an EFI 460. The programming is very unforgiving of some cam profiles and will quickly go into an electronic snit unless you have a cam designed for that application.
The best money spent on late model 460's is in the exhaust system. Banks makes a great kit that has been proven by outside tests to do exactly what his literature says it will. It's expensive, but the gains are significant enough to warrant it and the equipment is some of the best quality aftermarket stuff I've ever seen.

Walker makes a muffler 2 into one that has 1 inch of back pressure the stock one is about 8 inches of back pressure. I also think the older 460 86ish had bigger head pipes. So the muffler trick is a tremendous improvement. The FI system on these engines left much to be desired compaired to other FI offerings from Ford. A 5.0 Mustang throttle body in place of the stock one is good for around 40 LBS of tork. my 86 there was also two perforated discks in the outlet tip at the rear. Drilling them out saved me 1/4 of a tank of gas over the same run maybe a bit more. Carbed versions I did for friends that used them for halling race cars got 20 to 25 back in the day of good gas. Todays gas maybe 15 to 20 is my guess. Will be doing some mods but its not in the cards right now.

i am in the same boat...i have to pull the head and want to put a cam in my 95'. but DONT want any computer issues.
one guy at crower recomends the baja beast cam (22915), while the next recomends the compu pro (22240). the baja beast seems a little mild...the compu pro is 215/221 & 527/535 lift on a 112 seperation. both make power in the 1500-4000 range....while the beast will be a little better in the 1500-2000 area....i personally think im better off with a little more in the 2600-3100 rpm area.
i am reinstalling everything with the full banks system and a set of cleaned up heads.
i havent made up my mind on the cam yet....so i am interested in hearing opinions.
i dont like lunati cams.

i am probably going with the comp cams "compugrind" cam no. 34-355-5 for the efi 460. it is fairly mild at .490/.495 and 212/219 @ .050" with 114 seperation.
i currently run a compugrind cam in my 302 with some mild headwork and it runs much stronger than stock.
i hope to get the 460 assembled and swapped in soon - so i'll let you know how it works out.
i also just got my headman elite series hedders (very nice product) and i plan to port the heads a bit before i'm done.

On my motorhome with a 460 carb, I had to tear the heads of it as it had the famous broken exhaust bolt..So while it was torn down that far I also put it a crower 22239 cam in as I was a bit afraid of the 22240 for smog reasons..A new roller timing chain and a full Banks system..Wow,what a difference with that 14000lb motorhome ..now I fear nothing when it comes to passing and hill climbing
