I have a 2000 xlt 4x4 Ranger. Since the day i purchased it every time the ac compressor kicks on i get a loud thump,the dealer has replaced the compressor accumalator and no change with the noise.they tellme its normal knowone else that i talk to seems to have this problem. Any help

 

Are the bolts holding the compressor tight? When the clutch engages it could be moving the compressor or its mounting. A mounting bracket could be broken also. A hose bracket could also be loose.

If the gap on the clutch is too wide, the clutch can make a thump when it engages. The gap is generally about the thickness of a credit card. Did the dealercheck the gap or replace the clutch when they did the other parts? I'm making the assumption that this thump occurs at every speed, at idle and going down the road... Right? At idle, you can expect a slight thump as the compressor is engaged. At road speed, it would be an almost imperceptable hesitation.

If it were mine, I would demand to see another of the same model, at least the same engine-trans combination. Check how it worked, and if it was quiet, I'd politely point out that fact. In some states, a dealer has a certain number of allowed attempts to effect a repair before the vehicle is deemed to be a lemon, and then subject to repurchase by the dealer...
