Whacky idle then quit w/no spark

Hi, OK here's the deal.. 88 Ranger 2.3 5sp Fuel Inj. no AC. Pretty much stock everything. Lately, the idle has been high after warm up, other words the idle seemed to stay high between gears like speed shifting without the gas pedal pushed (Fun... but NOT NORMAL) also at a stop with clutch in or in neutral it would take a while to idle down. This has been occuring on and off for a few weeks now. The "Whacky" part is the other morning the truck just flat quit running on the way to work. Got juice, Cranks good, got lights ect. fuel pump relay and fuel pump sound normal. Checked for spark at plugs and coil by cranking and looking for spark....got nuttin' hunny. I realize I may have two seperate problems..maybe not. Been a good runner for many years with regular tune ups, oil changes ect. My question is ..Where do I start, to avoid needless parts replacement and wasted brain power? Sumbuddy peez hep me.

Found the prob.....BUSTED TIMING BELT...that'll take away yer spark Ay?....DUhhh. Anyway, got a new belt..installed it by the book (timing marks lined up, dist rotor pointing to #1 ect.) Starts rite up, idles good, but now its sluggish on acceleration. Do I need to time the ignition with a timing light? or is there something else to consider...once again peez hep me....thanks.

You should at least check to see where the timing is set at. From there, you can try to bump it up a little to see how it likes it.
