Jasper's 302

OK here goes:

If anyone here is one the Bronco Forums, you know where I'm going.

1988 EFI 302 4x4 w/C6...bone stock

I bought a Jasper engine awhile back, another 302 to replace the beat one just for the sake of consistency. After I put it inm she was great, ran like a bear, entirely highway mileage (shoulda gone 351 I think). Anyways, that when the problems started to happen. Mostly with the externals, TPS, ICM, Exhaust manifolds...then I started notiving different things. I changed out the O2 Sensor, the EEC Power Relay, spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires...Still to no avail. Then the EGR came along.

Let me get off that rant...anyways, 55,000 into the 75,000 warranty, I have no compression in 3 cylinders. Tests were run obviously to determine this, and more at Jasper's request to figure out what it was. They're telling me that a few valves are burnt. How can this happen. I'll be the first to tell you, believe me or not, that I babied this thing. I don't come across this money EVER, so I did everything by the book, even better. I drove like a driving instructor for 2,000 miles for the rings. I never floored it. I never took the new engine above 75. And I never let the oil get 3,000 miles old.

Why'd this happen? Is there a possibility of being beat by Jasper (hasn't happened, and still doesn't seem likely, just covering bases)? As of now, they're just going to drop new heads on the 55,000 mile old bottom end, which is in good shape. Still not 100% though. Is this gonna be ok? I'm just trying to cover my butt for the worst case scenerio, whatever it is...trust me, Murphy's law has got nothing on Morgan Luck.

I don't know the quality of Jasper engines but I have bought a few rebuilt long blocks from various companies. It seem like they never last much past 60,000 miles. To keep cost down most of the companies use cheap parts. Your 55,000 miles sounds about right, maybe somebody else can give you a different point of view. Now whenever I need a rebuild I get the parts myself and if I don't do the rebuild myself, I get the local speed shop to do it. I'm rebuilding a 302 to a 347 and I'm already up to 2600 bones in parts. I'll admit it isn't the cheap road but in the long road it pays off. Good luck

Which three cylinders are zero?

Is the compression test done with all the spark plugs out?

weak springs = valve contacts piston = they be bent

I take it your oil and radiator coolant looks normal?

Don't have the cylinder numbers, but 20, 20, and 30...not 0.

Not sure...the shop did it just recently.

They said burnt, but that was relayed from my old man.

yes to both...and Sanders...you're not allowed to reply anymore.

j/k...but it's certainly not what I want to hear. Financially, I cannot do it right now, nor do I know of a reputable speed shop near me. Doesn't mean there isn't one, just I don't know of one. Besides, for being under warranty, I'll take the new heads for free (if that ends up being the case).

BTW- There's a good article in Popular Hot Rodding about stroking engines. It has a white Z28 on the hood with black stripes...just picked it up at Autozone recently, probably still out.

OK, so I just got off the phone with my old man who just talked to the shop which has my truck. He said $600 for the fix. He was putting new heads on.

Here's my problem...this isn't sitting right with me.

A) Apparently the heads sent were newer and he had to drill a hole in my intake...I don't like that.
B) Jasper didn't send all of the gaskets...whether it was on them, or up to the mechanic to get it is still unknown.
C) Jasper apparently pays $50/hour for labor t replace parts under warranty, he charges $58...$8/hr difference to my pocket.
D) New wires and plugs. There were alot of problems with the combustion, the plugs were new though (maybe 100 miles) diddo with the wires, only he claims one was burnt.

Guys, I'm going to pick this up this afternoon or tomorrow...but I'm telling you, something isn't sitting right. I'm going there with my check book and not even glancing at it until I'm 100% sure of the work and the parts, etc. Any advice, stories, help...anything. Like I said, I didn't even see her yet, but something is bugging me enough to ask.
