OAGES --I bought the truck from a friend and it has a chip also, but he was unsure of the brand. Is there an easy was to determine what chip I have? When I take the O/D off, it is not as bad also.
Well, I'm probably not the most qualified to answer your chip question, but my chip is located under the drivers side dash. I pulled the fuse pannel to see it. It's right above the emergency brake. It's on the end of a small black plastic box that covers the ECM case. I had mine installed the first time and the guy was good enough to write the programing codes on the chip and the chip itself was labeled Superchip. The back of the black plastic cover had to be cut to allow the installation so it was all pretty visible. With a droplight or flashlite.

It's called "surge bucking" some do it some don't mine does it since day 1 at the 40 to 45 mph range their is a couple known theiries on this. Some say that the engine oil is becoming aireated and causing eractic fuel pressure for injection. Some say switch to syn oil and it takes care of it. I just deal with it and forget about it. Some also say it is a charateristic of the 7.3

2001 5.4L Red Screw with 35,000 mi. I am getting the dreaded "jerking" at 45 mph while engine tries to shift from 3rd to 4th gear. Just started after dealer 30,000 mi. service. Slow throttle pressure up from 45 keeps it jerking while putting my foot in it makes it disappear. Also have noticed a very subtle jerking when starting out from dead stop. Took it to dealer last wednesday and they did diag. on it with no codes showing, also they did a number of system and pressure checks with nothing obvious found. They did find #6 cyl had type A misfire rate of 2.22%. Coil pack for this cyl was changed and tested ok. In gerneral dealer answer was "could not duplicate customer concern" and gave it back to me. Strange that whenever I drive it the jerking is there. Going to take it back to dealer on monday and offer to demonstrate the jerking to tech. I have extended warrenty on the truck so I am ok there. This truck has never towed anything and had better then average care so far in its life. I did drive it on a 3,200 mi. road trip recently with no problems (Minnesota to Tampa and back). Jerking started when I got back.

hey man this is a diesel form.
but since i am an L1 maybe i can help since i know alot about gas and little about diesel's.
sounds to me like you may have a bad coil pack. very common on 5.4L. mileage does not matter though.
it has beeen my findings that water gets down inside the hole in the head then the coil misfires so many times and then it finally either has an intermittent skip or just quits all together.
these can be very tricky to diagnose if these is not a illuminated MIL or a misfire code for a specific cylinder misfire.
also had one a 2001 that had a light skip or a surge at light throttle and found a prematurely openig EGV opening.
good luck.
emmission parts should ne covered for 80,000 i am told by the STEALER!

I found this TSB on the dieselstop web site (1999faq/Trouble-TSB.htm):
--------------------
99-8-1 - trans 4r100-shift flare (rise in rpm`s) during 2-3 and or 3-4 upshift
Problem - A Shift Flare of 200-300 rpms may occur intermittantly during the 2-3 or 3-4 upshift on some vehicles. This may be caused by reduced Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) flow at the transmission solenoid body assembly.
Action - Replace the Solenoid Assembly with a revised Assembly and reprogram the PCM with the updated codes.
Affected Vehicles - 1999 Superduty F-Series Made after 12/98
----------------------
This sounds like a good description of the the issue I'm having. I will mention this to my dealer when I take the truck in this wednesday.

an update for those of you following this thread. i just got my 99 psd back from the dealer tonight. they checked for codes and found nothing. they replaced the solenoid and reprogrammed.
i only drove a short distance home but could immediately tell the shifts where more firm going into 2nd and 3rd. i tried to reproduce the surging with light throttle around 45mph but it behaved just the way it is supposed to. so far so good!

I'm no mechanic, but I don't think the solenoid assemly inside the transmission is the same thing as the TPS. The dealer dropped the transmission pan and looked around, he said everything seemed fine. Check out the post above regarding the TSB. I discussed this with him and he said that was pretty common and reprogramming should help. The solenoid assembly was the only part required and that was about $150 (I'm sure it's only worth $25 but we all know how dealers and automotive manufactures make their money). Add labor and the transmission flush and the grand total was $500.
