Gas tank float

My fuel gauge hasn't worked since I started bring my truck back from the dead. It worked 5 years ago. Anyway, today I pulled the float mechanism from the fuel tank and to my surprise there was nothing to float. Just the mechanism with a heavy wire arm hanging down into the tank with nothing on the end to float. My question is, what is the floating device and can I buy it all by itself or do I have to get the entire mechanism?

They came with either a plastic ball or a cylindrical brass float.

Go here and click the pic link for the part.

They also sell just floats

thanks boys. It's all i needed. And GolferSA. The link you sent had a great picture. One question. What is the little black top hat looking thing? Also mine didn't have the gasket. It had silicone sealing it in. I guess that should work eh?

If I had to guess (and I do) I'd say it's a protecting cover for the electrical connection?

Gasoline and silicone?

Make a gasket, cork is cheap... this thing lives inside the cab with you... fumes are no good.

just a fyi, if your in a farming comunity some of the older ford tractors (1960's) used the same brass float. also 1992 explorer I know uses the same one as well. the rubber "hat" on the float is to keep it from rattling aganst the tank sides if it happens to get that close.
