what happens to cars that don't sell

They are probably optioned wrong and are dogs....Usually the dealer's inventory is made available to other dealers and if there is a call for a certain model, away it goes. Sounds like these are just plain dogs that didn't clear out at the half year sale, the summer sale, the fall sale, the new model sale, the back to school sale, the Thanksgiving special sale, the Christmas sale, the inventory reduction year end sale, the New Years sale, and the January saving day sale.....
Either that or the dealer likes to look at them, or he doesn't have many sales...

Hmmm, that's a good question. I love Rangers and I like looking at on-line inventory at lots in the region. I notice there are still lots of new '04 models out there with '05's rolling in. I'd say if you are lucky enough to find the one you want still on the lot as the '05 models take over, you could make a killer deal. No idea what becomes of them if they still won't sell. Maybe they get sent to super high volume lots where they will eventually find a home?

Some are leased for a year, or traded in, and some dealers even take back fleet vehicles (like rental companies) with low miles towards trade in. Some are trade in vehicles from individuals too.
When I buy I try to find one that is previous model year. Last one I bought they gave 8500 off, 4000 rebate for being year old model, and 4500 because it had 6000 miles as a demo. I also went during a blizzard, and was one of 3 people there which helped as they gave me an extra 3000 over blue book for my trade to make the numbers work out better, essentially paying it off since I was a bit upside down on it. didn't hurt my friend had just dropped 45k on a special order explorer with the same salseman the last week either, and he went with me

There is not much of a discount on a "new" last years model because it is still a new vehicle. To someone that trades vehicles every few years the depreciation hit would be tremendous. To someone that keeps a vehicle for 10 years a leftover depreciation is not a problem. A vehicle that is sitting on a lot must still be driven occasionally tho or things go wrong.

I bought an '89 in August of '90. I can't say it was a Mercury Topaz, or I will be ridiculed and laughed off the site. Anyway, it had almost ever option, with bordello red interior, power locks and windows etc. It even had the higher output motor, 100 horse vs. the standard 98..... but it was a 5 speed.
Sticker: $12000+, my price, $8950.
I couldn't beat BMW 318's or 320's, but I could keep a fender on them so they couldn't cut me off.....
I really miss the little luggage rack on the trunk....

Some dealers (especially those real small ones) have an "unusual" attitude when it comes to their inventory. There's a certain price that that just HAVE to get, and they'll sit and wait till the right person comes along and pays it. Even if it takes 2-3 years. The truly sad part is this: there are NO rebates on any new '03 Fords. You can actually buy an '04 for less. And there's no getting around the fact that, although new as in never been used, a leftover '03 is still a 2-year-old car.

When a car gets 2 years old on the lot where i bought my last truck they go as low as they can and set the aside to "highlight" them. About 4 weeks ago they had a brand new 2003 reg cab 4x4 V6 flare side F150 for about 13,000. That is not bad for less than 25 miles on it. Still some sucker down the road probably paid $14,995 for the same thing used.

maybe the dealers drive them... they could keep them as a courtesy car or a parts getter for the garage.
sometimes people buy a car, everything's fine, but then something happens to the financing and dealer has to take a car back with already a few hundred clicks on it
i think around here they go to auction. they can't afford to sit on a 20,000 car that won't sell.
i went to see some 2003's they claimed were 10,000 off. they nickel the price down but they won't give you the 0.0%. i guess it's a good buy if you can't qualify for the low interest anyway

My dad went truck shopping back in the 80's, a chebby unfortunately. It was end of the model year 86 and he found one he liked but they wouldn't budge on price at all. He went back a year later and the truck was still there. Sad thing is, even though they were willing to talk then I don't think he got a whole lot off.

Hot Deals :
A school chum from high school who has sold vehicles his whole life told me to by in July and do it at a big dealership with a full lot .
Check the frame rails and under carriage for signs of early rusting .
This vehicle has been sitting on the lot with interest and demerage being paid
all year and will bring the best deal .
All big dealers operate on consinment and only look at volume of sales at closing time . Any commission salesman working the lot will sell anything on the lot for $500 profit before closing time . 3.00 pm is the time of day and ask to see the shipping invoice which will be in the sales managers desk not on the side window of the truck .
When the salesman keeps telling you he has to clear any deals you can weasel out of him with the manager , this is what he is checking .
I purchased my 4X4 this way and paid less than everybody was putting out
for pick ups .
