302 Bronco to 302 Grand Marquis

Hello all. I have finally got around to replacing the bad 302 in my 1995 Bronco(realistically wintyer IS coming and I'll have to park the Harely) . I am installing a 1991 302 from a Grand Marquis. I already have the old engine out, and have stripped the donor down to just the heads and block and after a thorough cleaning and some Ford blue, I'll be ready to transfer all the old motor's peripherals. So far all seems ok except the donor does'nt have a sensor at the rear top of motor. I believe that this is the knock sensor but I'm not sure. Anyone have any ideas? Any suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Dennis

Is the sensor located in the engine block or intake manifold. Bob

Bob,
The donor motor does'nt have the sensor tap.. I'm assuming that it is a knock sensor based on a thread that I read here a while back. They claimed that you can 'just leave it hanging'.

Block

If there is no where to locate the sensor in the block, I'd install it in the manifold. It would still pick up some degree of "knock" through the manifold.

Oak Lawn huh?......Palos Heights here.

Would you be able to attend our second Illinois Chapter meeting in October?

Please feel free to attend and enjoy the company.

Thanks for the reply. I dont see where I can install the knock sensor in the manifold, so my original question was what are the consequences of leaving it off?
Thanks,
Dennis
Yes I will try to attend the October meeting, it is my birthday that week so the weekend is tight but I'll fit it in.

302

I can't imagine leaving the sensor hang will help at all. It may cause poor performance, etc. Are you using an aluminum or cast iron intake manifold?
I'd just find an area of the manifold, drill and tap hole for it. Be sure to avoid a water jacket. Do you have an idea what thread it is? SAE or a pipe thread?
I have drill bits up to an inch or so and taps 1/2" sae and down. The only pipe taps I have are 1/8" - 1/4". Do you need help in drilling the holes?
I have a Milwaukee 1/2" chuck "Hole shooter" and a floor drill press.
If you are able to celebrate your birthday with us at the October meeting. Ron

FastRonald,

I just got back into town.. had to help a friend out of town. I have the donor motor all cleaned up.... sandblasted and painted it, as well as the oil pan. Will start the transfer of parts tomorrow from the old 302. As for this sensor the threads look pretty big.... I'll take a better look at them and report back tomorrow. What date did you set for the second meeting?
Look forward to meeting everyone soon.
