Question 1987 Ranger 2.3L gas mileage

Hello everyone, what kind of mileage should I expect from my 87' ranger? My Ranger has a fuel injected 2.3L engine, 5 speed manual trans, and a 3.45 gear ratio rearend. This is a standard cab 7 foot bed truck that is 2 wheel drive. Any information from experience is appreciated. Thanks

Depends on how well it has been maintained and how many miles are on it.

The odometer in my truck reads 48,167. I don't know if that is the original mileage or if it is 148,167, I assume the latter for it's age. The engine doesn't smoke or use oil. It's recently had a complete tune up by myself at my shop/garage. Thanks " el c"

i have an 87, but its extended cab, 2.3, 5 gear, and 3.73's in tip top condition. i get 18-21 depending how and where i drive it (doesn't really care for hills) the biggest killer that i found is when your pushing it dont give it more throttle than it can take, more throttle=less vacuem=higher fuel pressure=poorer gas mileage

As far as MPG, mine has seen a wide range. I have a similar truck, 88' 2.3L, 5sp, x-cab, ??? rear end (I know it is 7.5"). When I first got the truck about 1yr ago it was only getting 17MPG avg. After many std service repairs, plus a new trans, new tank, fuel filter, and too much to list it runs great. Some stuff covered here: (cleaning the TB and intake was a big help)

Now I get MUCH better MPG. I only drive 10 miles to work, so it is mostly city/stop-n-go driving. 23-25MPG city, 25-27MPG hwy. Oh, I forgot to mention.... 115k.

Thumbs up

Wow, thanks very much for the information to all. Looks like I have some reading to do from your link G2IC_Wraith. I will definitely read this and see what I can come up with on my Ranger. I'm getting ready to do a tune up on it this weekend. Again, thanks very much for the replies and the help.
