sliding rear window latch

i just noticed today that there doesnt seem to be anything for the latch on my window to catch on, which would prevent it from being opened, am i missing some sort of lip or clip?

On the stationary part of the window there should be a plastic black trim attached to the edge of the window that runs vertically from top to bottom that the latch catches on. I took a picture of it but I can not upload it as an attachment.
