loss of power

my friend has a 94 ranger that lost power. its a 2.3 one of the coils is dead it aint getting no power in but the coil is good. no CEL. itstarted about a month ago. just when it was cold. but then it got worse. now its all the time. between 45 and 60 its real bad. i dont think the secondary coil ever worked because its always been gutless compared to my 91 2.3. tonight im going to run a jumper wire to the b+ wire that runs to the coil and see if that does anything. but what i was wondering why it would just get gradually worse. i was thinkin fuel filter. any other ideas would be nice

Have you checked for stored codes?
Here's a link to the Ranger board's Technical Information sticky:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=107538
The 94 is EEC-IV. There's enough info there to bring you right up to speed with the system. You'll need a multimeter (VOM) to pull codes.
There's some very expert guys on the Ranger board that would be happy to help you through this problem.

Not being an expert myself, I'm just suggesting a complete inspection. I'm sure that I've read on the Ranger forum about stored codes with no light.
If you were to post on the Ranger forum, the guys there (lots of experts) could walk you through your problem step by step. There may be answers to the problem that are not at all what a regular guy would come up with AND would solve the problem.

The light does'nt have to be on to have stored codes. off hand I would suspect the throttle possition sonsor (TPS) when it goes bad it tells the computor(PCM) not to open the fuel injectors. They will slowly go out.
