Compass / Temp

2002, 4.0 Auto 4x4, 4 door, 87k. The compass will only read N, or E, Have tryed the book recomended reset. No luck. Temp read's within 1 or 2 of actual.

Try disconnecting the battery for 20-30 min. When you reconnect the neg cable, the system will reset & have to be recalibrated. Other than that, locate your temp sensor, near the left headlight, make sure its there, intact, and still mounted. If it looks ok, then take it in for service.

Compass / Temp

Tryed the 30 min. disconect, Did the reset /calibration, no luck, still reads N or NE. Any idea on what the temp unit look's like ( need a clue as to size, shape, or color. ) No book, no idea what I'm looking for. .

It looks like a short cigar and is mounted behind the bumper under the drivers side headlamp it has two blue leads one with a yellow stripe

I don't know where the geomagnetic sensor is, it may be a circuit in the PCM, but is there any chance of having something near the sensor that's emitting a magnetic field. A constant magnetic field near the compass could override the earth's geomagnetic potential and lock the compass in one direction.

The geomagnetic sensor or "Flux Gate" is located in the console itself so if your kid has stashed a magnet in the door opener compartment that could be the cause of your problems. Otherwise you will need a new console they are reasonably priced on ebay and if you really need one send me a private message as I have at least one spare.
