1.8L Mazda Engine

I have seen these engines in ford couriers. Are they any good? Speed? Is it a rotary? I can't find any information about these on the internet, so I came here. Are they a good strong engine, or something that falls apart?

Well the 1.8l mazda engine isnt a rotary. The main rotarys are 1.2 1.3 and 2.0 liters. The 1.8l were used in the ford couriers and mazda b1800 1970-1978 I believe. Are they good? Well I bought a courier with about 170k+ miles on it, i put a weber carburetor on it and the thing started right up. Are they strong? Well its a 1.8 liter carbureted inline four from the 70's. No vtec or fuel injection here. Its around 65-70 hp. Avalible with a 4 or 5 speed manual or 3 speed automatic, the 5 speed being the only overdrive options. Gearing ranged from 4.11 to 4.56 out back depending on transmission selection. Will it ever be a ground pounder? no. Are they good engines? yes. Are there go fast goodies avalible for them? not many but a few. Weber carbs and crow cams. If you want something to get you there , good on gas, and dependable then they are a good choice. If you want to lay down 12 second or less times.......well there are other ways.

I'm not looking to blow the doors off anything, just curious if it was a good engine. Can a tall person even fit into a courier? what gas mileage did you get?

Well first just to prevent confusion later, the mazda b1800 is the same as a
courier up till around 77, and the b2000 (78-84) is the same as the courier 78-82. The main differences being the tailgate and grille. I just got done rebuilding a 2.0l engine for my 83/84 model with the 5 speed manual and it was advertised as new to get about 25 mpg around town and up to 36 on the high way. I have a friend that has a 78 courier ( so same truck) and he says that is about right and his truck has over 300k miles on it. Im about 5' 10" and 205 pounds and I fit in the those trucks without any problem.
