How to Remove Timing Chain Cover - 4.0L pushrod Eng.?

Can anyone tell me the procedure for removing the timing chain cover on my '93 Explorer 4.0L (Pushrod Engine)?

Does it require dropping the Oil Pan?

Mine is leaking coolant...

Umm,I don't think your timing chain cover should be leaking coolant since there shouldn't be any fluid in there. Better check the weep hole on your water pump since that's probably where it coming from. It's on the underside of the pump directly above the timing chain cover. If it's leaking, it's time for a water pump since that signals impending failure...

How to Remove Timing Chain Cover - 4.0L pushrod Eng.?

Babcore -

I think I have the same problem. My '96 EB 4x4 developed an oil leak. The shop I took it to said it was the timing cover gasket that was leaking both oil and coolent.
They said that they would need to pull the motor to replace the gasket and the oil pan gasket. Cost: $1240.00

It sounds like a BIG project. Please post your results if you figure it out.

it is the crankshaft seal on the timing cover. I just paid $8.37 for the FELPRO timing cover kit. You get the shaft seal and three gaskets that you won't need if you just replace the seal. You take the bolt out of the harmonic balancer and use a steering wheel puller. Pop out the old seal with a screwdriver. Lightly polish the balancer seal surface with very fine sandpaper. Push the new seal in. One thing I found out the hard way is there is no lip that the seal presses against. First time I pushed the seal right into the engine.

How to Remove Timing Chain Cover - 4.0L pushrod Eng.?

i have a 96 explorer with the 4.0 pushrod engine also. i also thought i had a water pump leaking. bought the w/p and started to tear down and found out it was the gasket between the timing cover and the block where the coolant runs from the w/p. and yes the ford service manual says the engine must come out. i went ahead and replaced pump and retourqed the timing cover bolts hoping it would slow down leak. i also polluted the cooling system with stop leak. that has been over 2 years ago and i rarely have to put water in it.

i've heard u can sometimes pull the timing cover without pulling oil pan (i.e. pull the motor). has anyone else ever tried this with or without success.

My timing cover kit came with a gasket for the oil pump. ??????? I tend to believe that the cover can be removed but the oil pan gasket is damaged. You can create a gasket with silicone but how well it seals depends how well you clean the surface with brake cleaner.
