Exclamation Please tell me if this convertion will work

I have a 1965 falcon ranchero, 289 with a 4 speed transmition. My dad crashed his 1982 mustang when he got it so he has a 302 5.0L with 900 miles on it! In the mustang was a 5 speed transmition. Just for kiks, i want to do a engin and transmition swap on my falcon. I want the 302 and 5 speed in it. I would be very grateful if any one could tell me if this idea/plan would work. Thanks guys

you have all the pieces, it's just a matter of putting them all in the right place. is the mustang fuel injected or carbed? if it's FI you would need to get the in-tank pump from the mustang customized into the ranchero, and you might need a slight driveshaft length adjustment? sounds like a go to me, but what about the brakes!

Since it's an 82 it'll have a carb. You'll need to change a few things to fit it right. First is the oil pan, pick-up and dipstick. The mustang will be rear sump. Then when you go to change the dipstick, which is in the pan on the stang, you'll find no provision for it in your 82 timing cover. So, you'll need to change the timing cover. Caution is needed here to make sure that you don't have interference with your fuel pump eccentric and the timing cover. Early 289s had a different thickness of cam gear, when not matched correctly it will grind a hole in the back of the timing cover.
The transmission swap will require either modifications to the stock mount or use one for a early Mustang w/T-5 swap. Same for the shifter. Also fiberglass replicas of the trans bump are available. It'll work, just take your time. Have Fun

I may have made an error. The trans mount for a V-8 in 63 Ranchero/Falcon is not even close to a 65 Mustang mount. The 63 has a leaf spring in it. I'm not familiar with the 64-65 Falcon trans mounts. The 63 V-8 engine mounts are identical to the early 65 Mustang. I know that to be a fact. Sorry for any inconvenience.
