If its still the original its a 6-cylinder 144 cubic inch engine. Its the only one that was available the first year

Thanks! The color code is "J" which I thought was red (which the truck and interior both are now). Do you know if any other engine (170) can swap into the truck? Do you know where I can get parts for this truck? I am looking for a tailgate and haven't had much luck.

Chigl...

I have '61 Pickup as well that I just got in March. Like yours, mine is also in need of a tailgate. The ones I find are just too rotted to fix. (bad design?)

Some advice I got from the Yahoo 'Old Econoline' group was: "Unless you're restoring to original, replace the 144 with a 170 or preferable a 200." I just purchased a rebuilt 200 and am ready to drop it in this weekend. Parts for the 200 seem to be fairly common and I believe Ford made this engine up to 1983. I've been told the following on parts compatibility when swapping engines:

1. The 144/170/200 blocks are same size.

2. The heads, exhaust manifold, starter, carb, water pump, fuel pump, timing cover, oil pan and valve cover are all swappable between these engines.

3. The bellhousing on the 61 transmission will fit on all 170's and will fit on 200's made prior to 1969.

4. The 1961 distributor has a smaller hex size on the bottom of the gear shaft that may not fit a 170 or 200.

(Any errors I may have stated will probably get me a good flaming - advance apologies)

As I start reinstalling, I'll make good notes and let you know what kind of pitfalls I run into (in case you're considering a engine swap).

I've been able to pick up a lot of misc small parts from 'Mac's Parts & Accessories' (www.macsautoparts.com). They have a cataloge that covers older Trucks, Broncos, and 61-67 Econolines.

One of the best sources of knowlege has been the Old Econoline group on Yahoo. These guys seem to know every little detail of Econos. (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/...lines/messages) They've been friendly, helpfull and patient with me as a newcomer.

Good luck!

Thanks Matt. Any help and information is greatly appreciated. I look forward to what you find out when you do the engine swap and will check out the yajoo econoline group too.
