1999 Ford Explorer Brake, ABS Problem

The ABS light came on while driving on the freeway. I checked the fuses, wiring, wheel sensors etc. I do not have an ABS scanner, can a meter be used at the test plug? How do you reset the ABS light? Anyone have information on this problem.

Hi nocal and welcome to the forum
You should probably take the Exploder in and get the ABS scanned to at least give you some idea of where to look for the problem. It takes a scan tool capable of reading ABS codes to retrieve them. Apparently the ones that Autozone uses arent capable of that.
To turn the light off you can disconnect a battery terminal for 10 minutes or so and that should clear it, until the next time the problem happens.

I found out the hard way. Every shop I have been to charges a $90-100 diagnostic fee and they usually 'throw in' the 1st 1/2hr labor ... last problem I had w/my 99 F250 LD I went and bought the OBDII code reader at the auto parts store. For $100 it diagnosed my exact problem and I saved hundreds on the repair PLUS I still have the code reader. Today I had an ABS light activation and, according to Chilton's, if I use the code reader while the light is on it will give me a trouble code. Chilton's even translates the codes in case your code reader doesn't.

If you are a DIY'er I would definitely invest in the code reader and work from there. Nothing bothers me more than paying a couple hundred bucks to have a sensor cleaned or something similarly simple.
