Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

Well I am a gas drivin' fool myself but I do believe that the only engine that I know of in a truck from Cummins is a inline-6, not a V-6.

As for the Cummins vs. Powerstroke, that is like guys fighting over if Chevy vs. Ford is better. Well you and I know which of the two is better......

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

"FYI"
Your friends are wrong on several points. First, the engine you are referring to is a inline 6 not a V6, a big difference. Second, Cummins builds many engines all the way up to a 120 liter diesel. Some are used in locomotives, oil drilling rigs, power generators, various construction and mining applications to name a few. They have V12s and V16s, some are rated to 4,000 horsepower. And as far as a V8 diesel, I do not know if they build it anymore, but they did have a V8 that was called a 903 and was used in the trucking industry. Note, it did not do a very good job and I have not seen one in many years. You could tell what it was by the distinct sound it made.

VT903. Good call Scotte!!

Vee configuration
Turbocharged
903 CID

As for the Gen-Sets,....Absolutely monstrous engines. You win your bet dude!!

Matter of fact, there is a famous one.(VT903) The T.V. series "Movin On" had a W925 Kenworth that had one in it.

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

I've had experience with the Cummins 903 turbo diesel. It's a very strong engine but made for a larger vehicles. I drove an Amphibious Assault Vehicle as a Marine. The vehicle is basicly a troop carrier that can float in the water, and is rated for use in 10ft. seas. It weighs in at 30 tons dry, and can carry 25 combat loaded Marines and a three man crew. On land it can travel at about 40 mph. on it's tracks.

The Cummins 903 has a hell of a lot of power and I never had a problem with the ones I drove. However this motor is deffinatly made for a bigger vehicle than a pickup.

So yes Cummins makes a large V8.

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

Didn't Crummins make a engine called the triple nickle it was 555 cid displacement ? All I heard was Cummins V-8s were not that good there I-6 engines are barely adequate the only Cummins engine I like is the 400 Big Cam. If you want a good V8 get a 7.3 IDI PSD or a 8V92 Detroit I heard the 500 Mack V8s are all right.

Yup, they had a triple nickel 555 ours was in an early tandem axle dump truck. It was a D800 Dodge truck. Diesel was just starting to grow in that field. The 555 was either a good one or bad one, we had a good one.

I'm no expert on what who makes. But give me the PSD International engine any day. I got the 5.9cummins in my bus and its the last one we ever get. Bottom line its gutless, not enough power, and crummy fuel mileage compared to our DT444 witch does twice as good. Goes faster too.

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

I hate to say this but anybody who is a dodge cummins fan has never driven the Power Stroke. I had (key word HAD) the Cummins what a whimp! My 1/2 ton 302 V8 gas burner would go toe to toe with the cummins! Now the power stroke has real guts. The new Durmax seems to be giving the Power Stroke a little competition though! But the Alison 5 speed may be the real difference there! Beside the Dodge resale is in the toilet.
My dad always said if you buy a dodge you better love it cause nobody else will ever want it!!

We have a 10 ton army 6X6 at work with a cummins v8-300. It has 785cu.in. displacement and makes 300 hp @ 3000rpm. we load the truck to about 90,000lbs and the motor does allright, but you have to wind it right up to the redline to get any power out of it. I had to replace the motor and tranny about a year and a half ago - the engine weighs about 2300lbs, so getting it into a pickup would be a job. We have ours mated to a mack 10speed, but an automatic would make better use of the motor's high power band. This one has no turbo, but I believe the later 903s do.

As for you cummins B5.9 versus Navistar DT444E guys, the cummins b is a smaller engine. It's great for its size but asked to do too much with too little displacement. If you want cummins power drop in a C8.3, plenty of power (~1000ft.lbs. torque) but you will need to make a few mods to get it into a pickup. Either way, the cummins B and C motors are straight sixes and will have different power producing characteristics than any V8.

PS - Those big cummins V8s sure do sound cool with dual 4" stright pipes!

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

The little Cummins B was designed for use in heavy equipment like excavators and tractors never really for light truck use or even medium duty use. I wish some of you were around F.D.C. when I'am trying to convince the Dodge freaks that Cummins 5.9B doesn't rule the diesel world its also hard for them to admit they own a POS for a truck. The 5.9 is a small engine and people are trying to get too much power from a small engine that was never designed for it I would take a PSD over a Cummins anyday.

Does Cummins Make A V8 Diesel???

Hey Kenworth

How you been, I care to voice that i have a different opinion, the 5.9B 12v cummins is produced by cummins with up to 160-230 and off road 250-370HP factory. The problem most people have with it is the power band and task matched gearing, it is not a matter of size and under powered it is more so driving habits.

To give my sick and skewed perspective, the 7.3 is a V-8 which has a broader power band, the I-6 cummins holds its torque on a different curve and in a different fashion. Similar to how in big trucks an I-6 CAT 475HP will out pull a Mack V-8 550HP on a hill with less shifting and at a lower RPM=less fuel used, but the Mack will run away from the Cat once it can wind itself out especially on the flats. The Mack can Rev an extra 1000RPMs and maintain power where as the Cat requires using a smaller window of power. Better yet in the same binder family The 444 is rated with more HP yet a 466 I-6 rated w/lower HP will out pull it V-8 vs I6.

The 7.3 is a much more user friendly street light truck motor. The 5.9 is offered for medium duty by Ford, Freightliner, bus companies ect at the EPA rating of 230Hp the DT444E has a higher rating and therefore will indefinately run away. I think for its size that the 7.3 is below it's potential and should be capible of more power especially since smaller motors like the up and coming PSD will be putting out more power at about the same displacement as the 5.9L.

Just my .02 but i try not to call any motor a POS since each is designed for a purpose. And each driver wants something different and drives differently. One might be more suited to your driving habits than another and one will be better to another user. In the end I believe the motor's performance to be in tune with the driver's ability to massage the vehicle into doing what he desires out of it.

Have a good one
