Question Interference or Non Interference engine?

I can't seem to find information on timing belt for my 1995 Explorer xlt (4.0L EFI V6). When to change it? If it is an interference engine or not. My friend recently had a timing belt break causing $3000 in damage to the engine. Due to unforseen financial circumstances looks like I will be keeping the old girl around awhile, so I want to make sure she stays in good running order. Need to know how urgent it is to get timing belt changed. I know that there are engines out there that will not damage when timing belt breaks, just can't figure out is which kind I have. Just rolled 94000 miles. Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated.

I am no expert, but I think that the majority, if not all of the first and second generation Explorers use Timing Chains, and not belts. The likelihood that the chain will fail leading to catastrophic engine damage is very small. There is no regular maintenance requirement for the chain in the '92 Exp (which I have). However, there have been problems with the timing chains. In the 1998 4.0 SOHC engine, there is a technical service bulletin out on the subject. Here is a link to it

You can do a search on this site for timing chains to get more data.
Also, look over at: https://www.ford-trucks.com/ and do a search as well.

Regards,
John

Like John sez yours has a chain not a %^$#@*&^ rubber band. Look at the maintenance section in your owners manual, it will tell you what you need to know to keep your truck running good.

thank you john

Thanks John, no wonder I could not find info on timing belt. I will check out the link. Again, thank you for the time to reply to my somewhat silly question!

You are welcome. The forum exists to help us learn from each other. Before I discovered the forum, I knew very little about how my Explorer works. Now that I have gained from the knowledge more experienced users have shared, I have a better understanding of how it works. When a problem arises, I no longer need to panic, but carefully analyze the situation with the help of the forum's experience. This helps to avoid having to take your mechanic's opinion at face value and paying for repairs you might not need.
