First look it over real good. Ive seen the bolts come loose on the shift cable bracket at the end of the steering columb, shift lever tube broken, shift lever bushings worn out, shift cable braket loose at transmission. Ensure everything is tight before condeming the cable.

Hi FUBARHUBAR and welcome to the forum
Homer mentioned the common problems that should definately be looked at first but yes there is an adjustment on the cable. Where the cable attaches to the lever on the transmission there is a lock tab that you push up, then you slide the cable in or out as needed and push the lock tab back down.
These cables dont seem to usually have problems though. If I had to bet, I'd say that the cable bracket on the end of the column , like Homer mentioned, is loose.

How you push up lock tab without breaking it?
