Vacuum pump pulley removal/installation
Hi All,
Just ordered a new Vacuum pump to replace the previous one which seized on my 1990 F250/7.3 IDI. ($102 from Kragens). from the pictures on their website, it looks like the new one comes without pulley. I took a look at my old one, but can't see exactly how to remove the pulley. Does it need a puller to remove, and to be pressed onto the new pump?
There is a threaded hole in the front of the shaft on the old pump - I'm sure that must be something to do with removing/replacing the pulley, but I'm not sure what...
Thanks,
Chris.

That bolt hole is for the reinstall after you get it off.
They make a puller that goes in the groove around the hub to pull it off.
Some of the pullers on the market will not fit into the dish shaped pulley with out a few trips to the bench grinder.
But then you will have one that works first time, the next time.

Hi,
Thanks. I went to pick up the new pump, and they told me that their puller wouldn't work - I grabbed one off the shelf there, and it worked fine.
To install the pulley on the new pump, I needed a 1/2" Course
thread bolt (strange that its 1/2" when the rest of the bolts
on the unit are metric...) and a couple of washers. The washers
need to be pretty tough - just clamp the pulley in a vice, insert
the bolt through the washers, through the pulley, and then into
the threaded hole in the pump shaft. Slowly cranking away on the bolt with a wrench, until the pulley lip is flush with the shaft...

When I do a vacuum pump, to remove the pulley I just use the old "sockets in the vise" trick to push the whole crank shaft of the pump out the back and out of the pulley at the same time. Destroys the pump, but it was no good anyway. Then putting the pulley on the new one is a simple matter with a bolt and impact wrench.

But I have seen nut and bolt sizes on these diesels that don't always match what most folks say they should be for a Classic example on my 93 the 3 injector pump
mounting studs use a 1/2" wrench yet most other folks seem to need a 9/16 or 14mm wrench... so ctann may very well have a pump with 1/2 inch threads.. I don't doubt that one bit

I actually like it when people revive ancient threads. I don't understand why there is a stigma against necro threads. If someone has something new to add to an existing topic, why not add to it, instead of making a new thread?!?
