Recipe for a 400hp/500lb-ft EFI 460...

I have a factory re-man '88 EFI 460 in my truck right now. It only has about 10,000 miles on it. I would really like to get at least 400 hp and 500lb-ft out of it. Heres what I'm thinking so far:

Stage I:
K&N filter
1 3/4 to 3" tube full length headers
new hi-po cap/rotor and wires
jacobs miliage master computer controlled ignition
3" single exhaust, no cat, either straight or 40 series flows

Stage II:
Crane Powermax 272-2H grind cam
Crane roller rockers
JET chip
Thinner head gaskets to bump up compression ratio
BBK twin 70mm throttle body

So what do yall think? About how much power can I expect to get with the first and/or second setup? I will be using my truck for daily driving, towing, four wheeling and the occasional run at the drag strip. Thanks in advance for the help.

Matt

You'll make less than 300 HP with either set-up. Also the 272-2 cam is going to require a 2,000 stall converter at least if your running an automatic and you'd probably want a 4.10 gear.

I ran my combo (see my signature) through my DD2000 software and only came up with around 265 HP. So I don't think 300 HP max is out of line with your Stage 2 setup.

By the way...the Crane catolog says that cam is for "Emissions Controlled Vehicles without Computer" and since you do run a computer you may have problems.

I was refering to fly wheel horse power. The factory motor has 280 hp, 410 lb-ft stock so you must be talking about rear wheel horse power? I have 3.55 gears in my truck, so my rwhp isn't going to be to great, but I want to get all I can. I will be keeping the 3.55 gears though, because I do drive the interstates alot and need to have half way decent milage. Oh and the truck does have a 5 speed manual tranny in it. I was hoping that the crane cam would work, but I better not try it because I really don't know what it would do with my computer. Are there any of the Crane Compucams that would fit my application? Thanks for all the help.

No, the fuel injected 460 is 280hp, 410lb-ft stock. The carb versions were probably arround 240hp stock, but I'm not sure.

BigBlockF-250,

Regarding cams:
Check Comp Cams for this year/engine application. Better yet, read the thread on EFI cams which has been going on very recently in this very forum.

I will not make any horsepower guesstimates, but one thing you might want to add to your list is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I don't have one (yet!), but there's been a decent amount of talk in this forum as to a noticeable performance benefit by installing and tuning one.

Yes, I was talking rear-wheel HP. And yes, even with a total of both stages your RWHP will probably not exceed 300 HP.

BigBlockF-250,
That cam would be a real dog since your going to stay with the 3:55 gearing. Your going to need to stay around 260 to 265 advertized intake duration max. The truck is just too heavy and your gearing too conservative to make use of more cam duration. Just my $.02

Deen
P.S. The EFI heads are power killers...a small-block Ch** head almost flows as much on the exhaust side!

Thanks for all the good info guys. I am planing on doing this all in two stages (as my budget allows) and will hopefully be doing the stage 1 mods very soon. I hope that just those mods will wake it up a little for now, and when I get a little more money (and time) to spend on it I'll get into the more indepth stage 2 mods.

I run a Comp Cam 268 grind in my /02 EFI which is converted back to Carb. I would look at a computer version of this cam for your application, the power band is roughly 1500-5800rpm.
We have installed many of these cams on chevs & fords for everyday street driven vehicles with no negative feed back.

87-94 EFI 460 230 hp 395 torque.
95-97 EFI 460 245 hp 415 torque.

In 95, they changed the fuel rail and injectors a little, the pistons went up in compression significantly, and they had a whole lot of extra electrical nonsense.

Roller cam and L&L headers will give you the biggest bang.
If you really want some power, get a vortech supercharger. 3000 bucks and will add 5psi. It will take you from a stock 245 to about 350 hp. Just like that. L&L long tubes (legal injection) will probably take you up close to 400.

If you wana go illegal, hell you could do anything to increase power. Roller cam and heads would be my first step. Im not sure exactly how you get your computer calibrated for that, The vortech guys gave me a computer with the supercharger.

This truck is faster than a lightning.

Thanks for all the info. Unfortunatly, I wont be doing any of these mods anytime soon. My ATV took a turn for the worst last weekend while riding, so I'm going to be trading it on a new one soon. There went all the money for my truck mods...

I’ve got a few questions regarding your build. I understand this is an old post but I’m just finding it and I’m extremely interested in your build. What heads are you running as in casting number? Is it stroked or using factory crank? Stock valve springs? What cam? I looking at rebuilding my 460 and would love that kind of power. So if you could give me a full run down on the build thanks.

efi460 shows 2008 as the last time he was here.

Here's a cookbook of serving suggestions for the 460 to get you into the ball park:
